Renovation work on downtown buildings is postponed until Thursday due to equipment breakdown at the D.C. Taylor Company. The contractor hired by R Town will not arrive until this afternoon, shifting the start to tomorrow. First buildings to receive beautifying work remain undesignated.
National Weather Service officials say Iowans can view a rare solar eclipse next Monday with the peak darkening around 3 15 p m CDT and an overall duration near 140 minutes. The path of maximum darkness will pass northern Alaska northern Canada central Quebec and the eastern Maritime Provinces.
Two Cedar Rapids men died in an early morning one car crash on a city street. Scott Harvey, 22, and Steven Baker, 21, were killed when Harvey’s car lost control, struck a turb, ricocheted to the opposite curb, and overturned and burned. They were dead on arrival at St. Luke’s Hospital. It was not yet known who was driving.
UPI reports Iowa crop observers expect July to be wet with normal temperatures. Overall conditions remain good to excellent for corn though poor drainage and late plantings cause yellowing and uneven spots. Hail damaged corn in north central areas, soybeans flowering later than last year with wide variation in planting progress.
National Safety Council official John D. Lawlor said the final Fourth of July traffic death toll could fall far from pre holiday estimates of 800 to 900. A United Press International count showed at least 699 traffic deaths by early Tuesday, with California posting 66, Texas 62, New York 36, Michigan 34, and Florida and Ohio 29 each.

H Ernest Lund proposes amendments to narrow scope from all property to real estate, excluding government buildings and utilities. debate centers on whether churches and charitable properties should be assessed and how to describe real estate owned by tax exempt groups.
A three judge DC circuit court, in a 2 1 decision, remands to Judge Hart the case over McGovern losing 153 California delegates. Daley appeal also sent back, with a temporary bar on further state court action. McGovern had won California’s 271 delegates before the Credentials Committee shifted 153 to other contenders.
Washington city council discussed a proposed curfew ordinance restricting hours for youths in public spaces without an adult chaperone. Six members heard views, second reading given, third reading slated, and a final vote pending public input. Sewer revenue bonds to be sold July 17 as part of city finances.
United Press International reports a cold snap across Iowa with July 5 temperatures sinking to the low and mid 40s in multiple cities. Spencer logged 45 degrees, Des Moines 48, Ottumwa 48, Burlington 47, with several towns tying or setting new alltime July records as a cool Canadian air mass and clear skies enabled rapid heat loss.

Des Moines UPI reports veteran carnival operator Al Kunz owner of Century 21 Shows testifies at Polk County District Court regarding rigging claims in a challenge to a state anti gambling provision. Kunz says 90 percent of Iowa midway games are legitimate noting no rigged games at the Iowa State Fair during his 8 year concession. He argues games involve merchandise not money and stresses games can be rigged but rarely are. He also faces questions about bingo operations at three locations including the Iowa State Fair and Cedar Rapids All Iowa Fair Keokuk street fair.
Kunz defending midway games as skill based during a morning session at the All-Iowa Fair. Crouch issued a 20 day temporary injunction shielding carnival operators from gambling raids by Turner's office, blocking a crackdown until the court rules on broad lottery bans. The suit argues many games are skill rather than chance and should be exempt from regulation.
A fire in Kinross damaged the former Kinross Elementary School, now a Mennonite church. Ten units from four communities fought the blaze for over three hours, confining it to the second floor with the top story gutted. Damage estimated at 25,000 dollars. no injuries. Fire officials suspect smoldering fireworks as a possible cause. Water was hauled in from Wellman, with over 15,000 gallons used.
Iowa reported at least ten traffic fatalities on state roads during the Independence Day holiday, down from 1971 levels. The latest crash near Clear Lake claimed Brad Zeigler, 22, with passenger James Ashland and driver Joann Witte among the injured. Other victims included Everett O’Brien, Raymond Kraai, Christian Kraai, John Angran, Gale Halverson, Wayne Johnson, the Rev Albert Olson, and Nisha Rathore.
In Reykjavik Iceland Bobby Fischer apologized for delaying the start of the world championship series with Boris Spassky. The Soviet chess federation pressed to cancel the 24 game match, demanding Fischer be ordered to forfeit the first game for not meeting an agreed one hour show up rule, a stance echoed by FIDE president Max Euwe who warned the match could be off. Fischer said the delays were not Spassky's fault and lamented the situation.
