Mr and Mrs Elmer Wells arrived home on the Narrow range from a Monmouth Illinois visit. Mention of Walter's Tem po smoke advertised as best in the market. Miss Julia Smiley also returned home from a Fourth of July visit at her Winfield residence.
In Hedrick Ja July 8 a premature fireworks explosion during Fourth of July celebrations killed Mae Johnson and Mary Sweitzer and injured several others. Rocket struck Johnson in the heart. another hit Sweitzer near the eye. Authorities say no blame assigned as the tragedy shocks families and residents. MR Johnson is identified as a nephew of Mrs Ronaldson of East Washington.
Packwood July 4 Special report says a large crowd attended the celebration. Nightwatchman Bert Fairchild spotted a man entering Campbell and Spielman’s store with a sack of flour. The intruder fled after being confronted by locals with firearms. shots fired, home talent suspected and watched.
Fairfield Iowa July Fourth celebration drew a large crowd as the Brighton band played in the park. A youth hurled slurs at players until Ernest Thompson, editor of the Brighton News, leapt from the stand and disciplined the offender. He was arrested and fined 12 dollars, while the other lad escaped a fine.
About five thousand residents enjoyed a city celebration with Brighton loses a hard fought 21 to 16 game. Dewey and Vogt played with Brighton. Alkire and Page fought in the evening and were parted before injuries. Harper to the west also celebrated with a large crowd.
Centerville Iowa July 8 special reports Ralf Wright son of Adjutant George Wright was injured in a Fourth of July explosion a cannon cracker blew off most of the fingers on his right hand two fingers may be amputated at least two fingers likely lost Boone Iowa July 3 special report
In Eldora Iowa July 3 a boy named Hardin’s son and another called Wighton suffered severe eye and hand injuries after explosives or tire crackers misfired. A glass window at Lombardo Bros fruit store broke from a heavy powder charge, causing a large hole. Photographer Reynolds’ son Homer Reynolds was among the injured. Replacement plate glass will be costly.
Mrs Jane Smith died at her Keota home Saturday afternoon at three. She suffered dropsy and was cared for by her son Rh F Smith on East Washington Street six weeks prior. She was born in Knox County Ohio and moved to this state in 1864 with her husband. The couple lived on a Dutch Creek farm before moving to Keota seven years ago. Her husband died two years ago on July 5. Surviving children are Rh F Smith Keota John Smith Clay County Kansas Sydney Smith Oskaloosa and Mrs Malcomb Delphi Indiana. Funeral was held yesterday at 3 p.m. conducted by Rev Brownell United Presbyterian Church.
Reverend W. G. Thorn, pastor of the Methodist church, receives a one month vacation from his congregation with services to continue next Sunday. Uncertain plans for the trip, he has not chosen a destination yet. The note also promotes Hall's Catarrh Cure and Hall's Family Pills, claiming cure for catarrh and offering testimonials and a $100 reward for any failure.
In Washington on a quiet Saturday many residents joined neighbors in nearby villages for excursions to Rock Island and Burling ton. Tickets sold briskly with a crowd at Rock Island totaling about 200. Temperance events, picnics, and lawn gatherings filled the day with speeches, recitations, and music by Loyal Temperance Legion members. Fireworks and refreshments accompanied a day of social visits and family outings.
The Misses Curran of East Washington traveled to Hurtington Friday evening and returned home this morning according to the partial report in the local brief.
