A severe storm across northern Iowa left five dead and caused extensive property damage. Rain and hail battered Decorah Ossian Calmar and Ossian while floods disrupted crops and train service. Lightning struck causing livestock losses and power lines were toppled near Ft. Dodge Galt and McGregor.
Harry Watkins of the Journal office found his car missing from the rear of the building about noon. He notified Sheriff McCarty and later learned the vehicle was recovered in Muscatine.
Closing exercises were held for two local Daily Vacation Bible schools with 380 pupils enrolled and about 300 in attendance. The programs at Presbyterian and United Presbyterian churches featured lessons, singing, and talks stressing Jesus as captain and Bible as rule book, with a missionary offering of 10.75 split between scrapbooks and Sunday school supplies.
Dr C A Owen of Assaft Egypt criticized parts of the layering mission report in a United Presbyterian church address. He valued the report for guiding mission work but argued the authors misread some efforts, favoring small scale action over large undertakings and noting the impact of modest Egyptian village schools and a hospital in Assiut. Huntington Beach Calif June 21 Flags are at half mast today for Harvey S Young city treasurer and vice president and manager of National Building and Loan Association who died at his home after four months illness. Funeral set for 2 pm Friday at Dixon funeral home Rev John M Engle officiating Interment Central Memorial Park. He leaves widow Eva a daughter Ruth Tucker Penora Iowa and a son Hoyt W Arlington Iowa.
A Flemish Giant rabbit named Peter was entered in a Brookline children’s pet show under the name ara Delano Roosevelt 14 month old granddaughter of President Roosevelt.
Emergency kitchen carnival opens tomorrow at Junkin field with an all day kittenball tournament starting at 9 and a final championship at 6 30. Admission is 25 cents for adults at Junkin field when presented at Case field with another quarter for evening performance. A dancing platform is being erected and an outdoor dance with a good orchestra is planned. Boxing and wrestling platforms are in place.
The revised program is printed again today on page and includes updated hours for the evening events.
A committee plans arrangements for stands and entertainment to be ready by tonight. Admission will be free for under ten, 11 to 15 pay 110e, adults 50c. The 56 percent charge funds the winter emergency kitchen, with all proceeds going to charity and volunteers not earning any money.
Mrs. KEA Stout and Mrs. Fred Gerlock of Brighton are hospitalized in Washington county after a Saturday night crash on road No 1. Their Chevrolet collided with a Washington International truck driven by P P McLamore. Gerlock suffers head and wrist injuries. Stout has chest and back injuries with multiple cuts. Vernon Stout, eight, and Mr. Gerlock escape serious harm.
Rebecca Ann Snider aged 102 died at home of her daughter Mrs Arnold in Lockridge after long illness. Funeral set for Eureka Methodist church with Dr. F C Witzigman in charge. burial Shrock cemetery. She leaves several children and a half sister, was a longtime Eureka member.
Rev. Carl W. Klein of Washington named county chairman for the Iowa State Emergency Relief committee by Governor Clyde L. Herring, replacing Frank R Sage as Sage moves to Des Moines. Klein had been handling duties for weeks pending the official appointment.
In Waterloo on July 3 a toy cannon exploded while being loaded by C. D. Wilt, killing two year old Catherine May Wilt. A chisel pierced her body and Wilt may lose a hand. neighbor Thomas Scarborough suffered a serious eye injury.
In London July 3 a note from President Roosevelt sparked friction at the world economic conference. He refused to join the currency stabilization push demanding removal of trade barriers and higher world prices as a prelude to long term price stability. Gold standard nations boycotted sub committees and threatened adjournment while Premier MacDonald faced pressure to accept a path toward a later resumption in Geneva.
Dr A W Henke and his family were honored with a farewell reception by Hampton's Methodist Church on Friday night. They plan to depart next week for Cedar Rapids where Henke has been appointed district superintendent. He previously served two years as pastor at Washington Methodist Church under Dr F Witsigman.
Washington merchants announce Washington Clearance Week from July 8 to 15 with thousands expected to attend the opening day. Big corner signs announce the event and next Thursday's Journal will publish full sale details. In other news, the baby daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Brock was taken to University Hospital Iowa City. their twin Mille Mardel Brock died June 16.
Mrs. Eunice Waymack of Cincinnati came Friday night to visit her parents Mr and Mrs E B Hammer for the remainder of the summer. Mrs Hammer Mrs Waymack and Robert and Billy Hammer were in Cedar Rapids today.
