City council stalls bicycle rule as sidewalk work advances

Last night in Freeport the city council met with Mayor McCollum presiding. A sidewalk resolution for East Washington was approved and the bicycle ordinance was referred back for changes. City finances showed various fund balances as agents discussed wages, sewer permits, and street work. A child was saved from a train wreck near Red Oak by locomotive fireman James Wheeland, a daughter of Freeport. Excursion plans to Burlington and the Fourth of July events were announced along with routines of local travel, church concerts, and community notices.

Favorable crop reports across states with rain aid

The week's crop reports show generally favorable conditions. Minnesota and the Dakotas report slowed growth from cool weather but overall prospects remain strong. rain is widespread in the Mississippi valley and Iowa forecasts record oats and corn. Missouri and Illinois expect large corn crops if weather stays normal, spring wheat ripening well, and fruit and vegetables cited as favorable despite some wind damage.

Cherries bring a fall for East Washington resident

Mrs. John Kilgore while picking cherries yesterday morning at her home in East Washington sipped and fell from a tree. She sustained deep bruising but no broken bones.

Bug juice shipment for upcoming Fourth of July party

A note mentions a usual amount of bug juice to be shipped today and tomorrow before the Fourth of July. Four kegs arrived today for the celebration. For shame.

Washington Iowa City Council approves sidewalk on East South Street

The City Council of Washington Iowa establishes a four foot wide plank sidewalk on the north side of East South Street between East Third and East Fourth streets. Construction must start within five days of publication and be completed in fifteen days or the Street Commissioner will build it and assess costs to fronting properties. Mayor H Be McCollum signs, City Clerk J J Kellogga attests.
