Des Moines reports say Charles Robert Santoro 13 drowned in the Birdland pool. Coroner J W Bai noted no doubt on death cause but suspects a physical factor. the boy known as Bob had a rheumatic heart in childhood, though he swam and played tennis regularly.
Toyohiko Kagawa, prominent Japanese Christian reader, told Waterloo audiences that the United States and Japan will not go to war. He said Japan seeks economic growth over territory, and that the nation desires peace. His talks were sponsored by the Waterloo Ministerial association and addressed luncheon club members, youth groups, and adults.
The former C. L. Percival Co. building in Des Moines collapsed as floor and roof sections fell, dumping tons of navy hemp into the basement. The brick structure, built in 1906 and vacated recently, housed hemp brought from the Philippines under a government contract and leased to White Line Transfer and Storage Co. for storage.
District Judge R Godman in Cherokee overruled George Crowder’s petition to withdraw his name from a four signer petition seeking Wapello County Supervisor Walter Smith’s removal. A similar withdrawal by Albert Bluhm was not filed. The judge also denied Jens Grothe’s request to examine Crowder for why he was induced to withdraw. Smith faces alleged irregularities in official duties.
Two Ottumwa youths, Donald Dekraai aged 6 and Leon Wiseman aged 9, were rescued from the Des Moines River by an unidentified sailor who pulled them from the water after they wandered into deeper depths. The sailor administered artificial respiration and took the boys to their homes before leaving. Harold Wiseman, 14, had warned the children to stay in shallow water but they followed him into danger.
Scores of Coast Guard boats and other craft patrolled foggy Casco Bay today seeking the crew of a 44 foot cabin cruiser that sank after an incident early Sunday. The vessel carried 35 men who did not return.
Claude C. Reister longtime Washington fire chief and member of the Reister poultry firm died at 64 after a heart condition with complications. Funeral services set for Thursday at L. A. Jones funeral home with a Masonic graveside service at Elm Grove cemetery. He served in Company D of the National Guard and fought in the Spanish American War era before leading the Washington fire department for 26 years. He was survived by Mary Richmond Minick his wife, three daughters and four stepchildren, plus siblings and other relatives.
Harrison Henry Hesseltine of rural route No 2 Brighton was the first 21 year old to register at the Washington county selective service board. By 10 30 a total of forty registrants had appeared and officials expected about 200 in the county.
Secretary O E Sehmitt of the Chamber of Commerce announced Friday July 4 will be a general holiday for Washington businesses. Food stores retail shops poultry houses barber shops lumber yards and libraries courthouses and the Y M C A will close. Drug stores open noon to four. Postmaster M C Delong said no mail deliveries but general delivery window will sell stamps 8 to 10 am.
A new mobile recruiting unit from the United States Army arrives in Washington for a seven day stay led by Sergeant Paul Schleyer and Sergeant Edgar W. McGinnis. The trailer will be stationed at Sunset Park with a film showing on Wednesday evening about aviation developments and recruits will be accepted for the air corps at Jefferson Barracks and in the Pacific theater.
Heinrich Kurt Nostiz an administrative clerk at the German embassy shot himself this morning in Washington D C authorities said Nostiz a German national about 40 years old had been ill for several months and died in a moment of mental low mood per embassy spokesman

A late day wind and dust storm crippled northern Washington County and surrounding areas. Trees and wires were damaged, several barns collapsed near Wellman, and oats suffered heavy damage while corn may recover. Power outages affected Wellman Kalona and nearby towns with repairs underway.
A thunderstorm with heavy wind and hail battered east central Iowa causing thousands in damages. Iowa County, especially Marengo, reported injuries and flattened houses and farm buildings. Davenport Williamsboro and Iowa City also recorded damage and 1.5 inches of rain.
A July afternoon windstorm at Riverside reached about 70 mph from the west shifting to north, snapping branches, tearing a garage roof, blowing down a hog house, and damaging crops around Washington. Reports from Glendale Prairie Flower Living Lake Shiloh and Harmony described oats and corn losses, blown trees, and scattered debris.
Central Park hosts a Wednesday night program featuring the Municipal Band and amateur contestants. The program includes marching numbers, World War songs medleys, and vocal selections by Wendel Baker, plus Sousa marches and community singing of America and patriotic tunes.

A Chicago coroner's jury found Country Editor Carl Anderson of Litchfield Nebraska was temporarily insane when he killed himself by jumping from an eighth floor window during his wife's death probe. Criminologists said a lie detector test indicated he was not truthful about murdering his wife.
The McIntyre mine operated by the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company recorded seven deaths after a dust explosion with officials opening an inquiry to determine the accident’s cause.

He noted 56 983 pension recipients statewide with an average $20 96 monthly check while Washington county has 418 beneficiaries totaling 8638 20 monthly. About 1529 blind residents statewide average 24 monthly with ten in Washington county. A county board of Rev Carl Klein Mrs J L Fry and Fred Bauer reviews applications and forwards recommendations to the state.
