A fire destroyed the amphitheater at the Monroe county fairgrounds in Albia early Sunday. Fire officials reported the structure had recently been torn down and rebuilt and was beyond control when firefighters arrived. The origin of the blaze remains undetermined.
Three couples parked on the McKinley school grounds were robbed of 12.50 dollars and a 40 dollar wrist watch by two armed masked men. Police believe the suspects are the same pair who held up two card parties in private homes a week earlier, escaping with 16 dollars at one and 19 dollars plus a wrist watch at another.
Des Moines reports 560 youths aged 17 to 21 will begin Civilian Military Training Corps activities at Fort Des Moines. About 800 youths are enrolled overall with 60 plus reserve officers in camp practicing with soldier tools and rifles.
Sam Eakins, 50, a farmer, died when his car hooked a passing truck driven by Harold Osweiler, ejecting Eakins into a ditch. Eakins sustained a fractured skull while the truck driver Osweiler was uninjured.
Lorraine Robertson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Robertson, burned to death in a Malvern home fire blamed on an exploding gasoline stove. The mother lost her grip on the child's hand while guiding her to a window. the charred body lay beneath bedding, thought to have fallen from a shelf.
West Des Moines Church of Christ burned, walls left standing, with about 20000 dollars in damage estimated. Fire started in the northeast corner and swept through interior before departments could halt the blaze. church member C W Bet said roughly 6000 dollars was insured on the brick veneer building built 37 years ago.

Washington reports the opening of a new law office by George F. Morrison on the second floor over the J C Penney store at the square northwest corner. Morrison, practicing since 1913 and former county attorney, moves from the Morrison building to a four room suite redecorated in the Curran building. His brother KE D Morrison Jr and nephew E D Morrison Jr continue their offices in the old location. Entrance is via the stairway south of Penney store.
The baseball trip to St Louis by Washington men has signup extended to July 6 for reservations. The committee holds 200 seats at the games until July 8 and 60 seats remain as the closing date. About 100 reservations are in, with 150 needed for the special train, with additional signups anticipated from Sigourney Wellman and other county towns.
Harry Anderson reported a Hubert Spencer- Bartlett red and white bicycle stolen last night near the State theater. Police Chief Jay Brown urged anyone with information to report it. Mr and Mrs W I Cummings and children Maxine and Billy of Ottumwa spent the weekend at the Harry Watkins home. They with Mr and Mrs Charles Beaty and Mr and Mrs Willis Beaty were dinner guests yesterday at the Watkins home. Mr and Mrs Cummings attended the reunion.
Des Moines reports from July 1 detailing federal tax hikes on incomes and luxuries in Iowa. The plan raises liquor and cigarette taxes, gasoline levies, and impacts about 50,000 residents for first time tax payments.
At least 13 Iowans died in weekend incidents. Eleven were in automobile crashes including Sumner Smith 23 Colesburg and Ralph Frisch 14 near Sumner. Other fatalities include Lorraine Robertson seven burned in Malvern house fire and Algor Larson a Stanton farmer who fell from a hay wagon.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announced a Navy recruiting representative will be in Washi Tuesday at 9:30. The officer comes from the Burti recruiting office and will meet young men ready to apply at the office tomorrow.
Virginia Moothart of 516 Wee Third Street won a mattress from Lees Furniture by guessing the most new ly correct number of stitches on the fabric. Her guess was 7680, 48 short of the actual 7728. runners up were Mrs Ralph Zeck of Washington and Hazel Boyd of Agusworth with 7777 stitches.
