Dr. Walter L. Bierring state health commissioner announced a new district health unit for Winne ageallamakee and Clayton counties expanding full time public health service to about 750000 people. This covers roughly 30 percent of Iowa's population.
Virginia Blair, 13, suffered the loss of her right arm four inches below the shoulder when a blowout caused the car she rode in to crash into a ditch near Lake City. Her mother, Mrs. Fred Blair, who drove the vehicle, escaped injury.
Edwin Blythe Stason, dean of the University of Michigan Law School and provost of Michigan, is among those the Iowa state board of education has considered to succeed Dr. Eugene A. Gilmore as president of the State University of Iowa. Stason, born in Sioux City, holds key university posts in Ann Arbor.
Services were held at St. Mary's church for Frank J. Strub 70 a longtime Iowa City merchant who died Sunday night of a heart ailment He was associated with the Strub-Wareham store Surviving are son Carl F Strub daughter Mrs P G Rowland and two sisters Mrs Rose Ebert and Miss Agnes M Strub all of Iowa City
By a 4 to 3 vote the Council Bluffs school board refused to renew the contract of Ralph H Williams 74 a board secretary who served 24 years The dismissal follows several economy measures the board had pursued in recent actions.
The State University of Iowa reports 3100 students enrolled in summer work with 1425 from outside Iowa. Represented regions include Nevada and Rhode Island absent, and nations such as Hungary, Turkey, the Philippines, Canada, China, India, Hong Kong, England and Holland are listed among foreign attendees.
Laurens oil dealer H A Murphy was knocked 22 feet through a door when a can of vulcanizing cement exploded while repairing a tire. His head and shoulder struck a gas pump, clothing caught fire, and he rolled in street dust to extinguish the blaze. He survived with a head bump and a minor arm burn, but the oil station burned to the ground.
Secretary O F E Schmitt says practically all Washington businesses will close on Thursday July 4 to observe Independence Day. Drug stores close noon to four, offices shut all day, mail halted, stamp sales only morning, library Y M C A and schools all closed, Journal prints none. Keota air show and Tipton centennial Fourth noted.
Mrs. Henry Ballard, 64, died suddenly at 2:30 this morning at her Pleasant Plain home. Survived by husband and six daughters and one son, with several daughters living in Washington. Surviving children include Mrs. Will Miller Havre Mrs. Arthur Eden East Pleasant Plain Mrs. George Weston Washington Mrs. Harold Crossett Wellman Mrs. Julia Dawson Washington and William Ballard Des Moines. Funeral arrangements had not been made.
Fred L. Stewart urged the city council to surface two blocks of South Avenue C between West Washington and West Madison with crushed rock and asphalt, proposing reuse of material from South Second Avenue. City awaits highway commission plans and bids for a contract this summer. A separate measure condemned an old house on South Iowa Avenue for removal within 30 days. Milk tests by J. Schliekelman found dairies’ milk satisfactory.
Wendell L. Willkie in New York contemplates a bold step by forming a three man board to conduct his presidential campaign. The move marks a new precedent as he seeks organizational direction for his nationwide bid.
Henry Stimson, former Coolidge and Hoover cabinet member, won Senate Military Affairs Committee approval 14-0 to become Franklin D. Roosevelt's secretary of war. Opponents included Hiram Johnson, Ernest Lundeen, and Joe Thomas. Stimson favors aid to Britain short of war and opposes sending American troops to Europe. Frank Knox nominated for secretary of the navy also favoring aid short of war.
County candidates who appeared on the June primary ticket face a final filing deadline to submit affidavits of campaign expenses to the county auditor within 30 days after the primary. Since the last report, Jesse K R Busby reports 55.32 for ads and travel, Marion George 37.87 for ads and cards, Mildred Norman 131.29 for ads stationery and postage, and Ek F Bauer 58.54 for county paper ads.
State executive council authorizes 478 payment to Roscoe Thoma of Fairfield an attorney who served as special counsel for the state in litigation involving Ben Summerwill of Iowa City formerly in charge of two Johnson county bank receiverships.
Donald M. Nelson, former Sears Roebuck chief, is named coordinating agent for all federal purchasing in the U.S. defense program. He will collaborate with the National Council of Defense.

The list shows owners from Riverside Kalona Wellman Washington and other towns including Jankins Shettler Kos Tudor Horn Miller and others with various makes such as Chevrolet Ford Plymouth Pontiac DeSoto and Dodge in town sedan pickup coupe and touring sedan categories. Trucks licensed rise to eighty six percent of the total.
Erma Erb seeks 12535.48 from Waldo Swartzendruber and Orville Morrison in district court claiming serious permanent injuries from a collision on Oct 11 1939 in Greene township Iowa County. Plaintiff alleges Morrison negligent while driving the car owned by Swartzendruber. Messer Hamilton Cahill handle for plaintiff.

Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Michels return from the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia where Mrs. Michels served as an alternate from the first Iowa district and Mr. Michels was an honorary sergeant at arms. They report a great convention and enthusiasm for Wendell Willkie. Also noted were Mr. and Mrs. Claire Dewey and other Washington attendees from Wellman.
A district Sunday school convention will be held next Sunday July 7 at 2 PM at Pleasant Hill church southeast of town. Participating schools include Pleasant Hill Eureka Coppock Hither and area churches Crawfordsville Methodist Presbyterian and United Presbyterian. C A Nicholson will lead the song service Rev Mr Knott of Kalovna will give an address. special numbers by the seven schools.

British authorities warn of possible German invasion of Ireland to support an attack on Britain. Reports from Bucharest and London note German air raids on Britain and rising war fears in the Far East, with Hungary eyeing Transylvania and Romania receiving German war supplies.
Chief Jay Brown reported that Harry Andersons bicycle stolen near the State theater Saturday night was found abandoned on Glen Greens property south of town, and reported by M Green. Brown noted this is the third such abandoned bicycle case in recent months in that area.
The Municipal band plans to open with the Iowa corn song during the concert season. Five band members from Cedar Township place a box of growing stalks on the Central Park band stand. The tallest stalk reaches feet. park caretaker Charley Wess will water and care for the exhibit hoping it becomes the town’s tallest.
