Survivors Describe Sub Attack On Tanker Rochester 101 Sunk
Thirty survivors from the 6836 ton Socony-Vacuum tanker Rochester tell how a yellow trimmed light blue German submarine sank their ship with torpedoes and shells off the Atlantic coast near Norfolk. Three crewmen in the engine room were lost and the survivors escaped in two lifeboats. The Rochester was en route from New York to Corpus Christi when attacked noon yesterday. The sub surfaced and fired shells after a torpedo strike. This attack marks the 11th merchant ship hit and 10th sunk by axis raiders along the U S coast, with submarines reported from Nova Scotia to Florida.

Two Killed as Car Hit by Great Western Train at New Hampton
Two people died when a car collided with a Great Western passenger train at a crossing near New Hampton. Objector Becomes Private in Army at Des Moines
Roy Alberti Clark, 24, of Garrison, formerly a conscientious objector, was outfitted and sworn in as a private at Fort Des Moines induction center. He had been tried on an indictment for refusing to answer the call of induction. Maj. Oliver P. Bennett said Judge Dewey allowed Clark to change his mind and the draftee joined without reservations.

Infantile Paralysis Drive Raises About 250 Dollars At Rendezvous
About 150 couples attended a dance at the Rendezvous sponsored by the Infantile Paralysis drive. The American Legion provided the hall and Rollo Sissell's band donated part of the fee. Prizes valued at over 75 were awarded to 45 winners. Donations from several workers and schools push the total toward 250 dollars with more contributions expected.

Kicked by Horse Four Year Old Dies
New Virginia report states four year old Clifford Cully was killed when a horse kicked him in the back of the head. Coroner C U Mitchell of Warren county notes the accident occurred in a barnyard where horses and cattle were loose. Steel Company Lays Off 703 Men in Gary Plant
