State fire officials could not determine the origin of an early morning grocery fire in Newton that disrupted most of the business district telephone service. Investigators found the blaze started in Thompson food store’s storage and receiving room and was not incendiary. damage is estimated at about 4800 dollars, largely insured.
S S Matson 47 Ames an insurance man was killed when a tire blew out causing his car to strike a guard rail and plunge over an embankment on Highway 69 five miles south of Ames Mrs Matson 42 who rode with him was thrown into a ditch and seriously injured She is at Greeley hospital Matson was thrown clear and died at once first 1942 traffic fatality in Story county.
In Des Moines the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association closed its convention with Prof. J Earle Galloway of Drake University urging proper nourishment as the foundation of health for soldiers. He warned that vitamins medicines and vaccines cannot compensate for an improperly nourished body.
Federal officials and the Burlington city housing commission met to choose a site of at least 50 acres for 499 additional demountable housing units for ordnance plant workers. Work may start after February 15.
David Allen Appleby infant son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Appleby living three miles east of Waterloo smothered to death in his crib. The baby was born Dec 6. Coroner Sidney Smith returned a verdict of accidental death.
A general alarm fire at the United States Arsenal in Springfield Newfoundland destroyed one building and damaged another. Production of the Garand rifle continued despite the blaze. Loss was estimated at 200000 dollars.
Secretary of War Henry Stimson notified Governor George Wilson that the Burlington and Ankeny defense plants will become U.S. government reservations February 5. Federal authorities will assume full police powers over 20,075 acres at Burlington and 1,997 acres at Ankeny.
A senate appropriations sub committee unanimously approved a 26,494,265,474 naval appropriation bill the largest in history to fund the next 18 months for a massive fleet air arm. The action followed President Roosevelt signing a 12,555,000,000 army bill financing 33,000 planes including 23,000 combat craft with 4,000,000,000 in lend lease transfers abroad.
Mailings go to Washington county registrants from the Oct 16 1940 and July 1 1941 military rolls. About 450 still await forms. Washington forms a new Iowa state guard company with Captain Howard P. Miller in command and Harry J. Donaldson as first lieutenant. Fifty seven men subscribed to the enlistment oath at yesterday evening’s mustering at the YMCA. More than enough to reach the 69 needed. others placed on a waiting list for future vacancies. Major James of Fairfield urged patriotism and discipline, praising Col. G. V. Caughlan and the First Iowa state guard.
Washington reports that American food sent to France for relief has ended up in Germany. A cargo loaded at Marseilles moved into unoccupied France then into Germany. Roosevelt urged citizens to keep sending clothing and food to foreign countries as part of the war effort.
The jury returned a verdict for defendant W P Hicks in the Administratrix Blanche Greiner versus W P Hicks case in Washington county district court. Damages were sought for the death of Daniel Greiner from a 1988 truck collision near Downers Grove Illinois. Pearl Bennett, a consignment livestock client, also died in the crash.
The list records the first members mustered into the Headquar ters company of the First Iowa State Guard regiment. It includes Howard P. Miller Captain Harry J. Donaldson and 60 others such as Charles R. Atkinson Richard P. Baker Edwards Croft and more. The text notes additional admissions later.
Red Cross solicitors are announced to canvass Washington county to raise the $3,900 quota for war relief. Campaign runs Feb 4–5 with groups for each ward and a downtown unit visiting key sites. Lead volunteers include Mrs R J Patterson, Miss Ruth Foster, and several other named residents, with headquarters at Atchison and Busby store.
