At the Iowa Retail Clothiers convention in Des Moines a top manufacturer plans to show only two suit models next fall. One model will be single-breasted with vest and no patch pockets on the coat. the other will be double-breasted with no vest. Trousers will have no pleats.
Des Moines reports Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl says the next selective service register will add about nine million men to the armed forces and boost morale of enemies. He urged Iowa local boards to stay open from seven a m to nine p m on registration day.
Rene Dussay, once Argentinian and now a U S citizen, told Ottumwa Women's Club last week that Argentina will pause world affairs for a revolution. He cited the clash of modernization with old landed elites and urban migration to Buenos Aires, which he said strains conservative elements.
At 12 20 a m a raid by state county and city officers found Fight persons drinking at tables and three bottles seized from customers. Sheriff A J Kutschat of Fayette county said about 60 people were in the cafe and fourteen empty liquor bottles were found. No arrests were made but several individuals were ordered to appear later before officers.
Des Moines reports 11 enemy alien cases arrested in Iowa since December 7 are being reviewed by the justice department in Washington. Iowa alien examining boards have sent their recommendations to the department, with disposal directions to immigration and naturalization officials.
Frank Stierwalt of Maywood Illinois will have funeral services at Dunn funeral home in Des Moines. He was a Rock Island railroad mail clerk based in Chicago. Surviving are his wife Verne Ashby and son Charles, plus Mrs. J A Ashby and brother Gerald Ashby in Des Moines.
Sunday crash at East Second Street and North Second Avenue involving Elmer Pontrager and Raymond Edwards. Mrs Bontrager injured a hand. Damage to cars estimated around 40 dollars. Iowa Continued this morning.
Washington February 1 Senators rallied to oppose an administration bid they say would block a price rise, with Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma arguing the effort would prevent farm prices from reaching parity under the price control law.
Last night’s low reached seven degrees above zero, the coldest since early January. After a spell of unusually warm weather the temperature cooled late last week and rose to about 25 degrees by noon as the groundhog saw its shadow signaling six more weeks of winter.
Two marriage licenses were issued today at the court house. Reynold J P Greiner of Keota weds Winnie Elizabeth Chalupa of Kalona. Maurice L Meyer of Ainsworth weds Flora E Dodds of Washington.
Judge P J Siegers of Newton, presiding over the January term in Washington, is ill and will delay jury trials. The case J Lloyd Lewis versus Maurice Olson will be continued to the next term. no further jury trials will be held this term. Non jury matters will proceed in his absence until Wednesday.
Des Moines reports General Grahl explains the February 16 selective service registration to cover all Iowa men aged 20 to 45 with few congressional exceptions. Registrants should register with their local boards and note home addresses if away from home to ensure forwarding of cards. A separate incident notes a crash at North Marion Avenue and West Fifth Street involving a Telephone truck and a car driven by Will Crayne with about 65 dollars in damage.
United States defense savings stamps drive shows carriers totaling 199.10 for the week with David McCall as top seller at 48.55 and Jack Pauls close at 40.55. Bronze medals awarded to Wayne Lowder, Bob Dodder, Joe Sweet, and Bob Skipton. silver bars to McCall, Kasper, Pauls, and Schilling. Total ship is 455.
The county treasurer announced 4 766 auto licenses issued by February 1 1942 up 389 from last year and near 5 000 expected with February 1 deadline. Delinquency penalties rise five percent plus one dollar minimum. Trucks total 36 trailers 127 more than last year.

Frank Miller district manager of the Iowa Southern Utilities announces no power shortage. He states domestic, industrial and commercial customers may use electricity freely and that the company has ample coal generated energy for current and foreseeable needs.
Mrs Milford Anderson and her son Richard along with Mrs Elizabeth Young have moved to 403 West Madison street after purchasing the residence from T H Berdo.
County residents encouraged to drop old license plates in a large box outside the courthouse. The box has already filled three times, and other towns report similar piles to be gathered and sold for Red Cross relief.
The war and navy departments announce steps to fix army navy liaison and anti espionage weaknesses. Rear Admiral Chester W Nimitz will lead all Hawaiian defenses while Lieut Gen Frank M Andrews commands at the Panama Canal Zone as Unity of command expands across land, sea and air forces.
Washington February 2 Chairman Norman H. Davis urged a oversubscription of the Red Cross War Fund to at least 65000000 this campaign, aiming to match wartime expansion and allow no further appeals this year. He noted 42005000 subscribed so far and 1533 of 3742 chapters met quotas, with hope for stronger support to finish promptly.
Bishop Ralph Magee of the Methodist church spoke at a Washington laymen conference in the local church. He urged members from Washington and Johnson counties to share blessings and dedicate property to God. Kimil Hesselschwerdt presided, Leigh Soule explained organzation plans, and Edna Klein provided music. This was the final of four Burlington district conferences after Muscatine Farmington and New London.
United Press reports American land sea and air forces striking back at a spreading Japanese offensive. In the Philippines, U S defenders repulsed two new assaults on Bataan with heavy losses after a naval stab into the enemy flank. The Japanese seized Pontianak in Borneo as defense lines stiffened under reinforcements while MacArthur described savage fighting in Bataan and many enemy troops drowned trying to flee by sea.
Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs announces that students in school under twenty may enlist in Class V-1 of the U S Naval Reserve and may be placed on inactive duty through the school year unless called to active duty by the Navy. District commanders are told not to mobilize them before official orders, and schools are urged to boost physical training and study for four months as Navy recruitment continues on a voluntary basis.
