George Eldon Anderson aged 23 and George Morey aged 21, both of Liscomb, were sentenced to 56 days in jail for stealing cord from Morey’s grandfather. The item theft is reported as a local courthouse note in the Liscomb area.
The curfew bell at the Iowa soldiers orphans home in northeast Davenport rang for the final time at 4 30 p m Tuesday. An electric clock and bell system will be installed to replace the old bell and clock.
Des Moines reports J Edgar Hoover director of the FBI will deliver the commencement address at Drake University on June 4. Hoover, a lawyer criminologist, holds five honorary degrees from nationwide colleges and universities.
DES MOVIES Cress 0. Ting ley 39 was arrested after police found a loaded shotgun in his automobile parked in front of his home. Tingley was booked for investigation with Captain Roy Clarkson stating no inspection seal on the car, inadequate brakes and illegal license plates.
A cartload of purebred cattle was exported from Homestead to Cuba. The shipment includes beef and dairy breeds purchased by George Harper of Havana with assistance from John Mooney of Fort Dodge. Clair Carlson will make his third trip to Havana to accompany the cattle.
A 1940 outlook from the Public Utilities association sales and distribution school predicts rising fluorescent lighting in the electrical industry. A. Nash of Davenport urges watching for new electricity applications while exhibitors claim fluorescent lighting is more efficient, longer lasting, and a growing trend.

Al Goddard accepts a sales department role at the McCreery Calendar company. The new field involves travel. he will spend about one day a week in Washington. Goddard recently sold the Coast store on the west side of the square where he worked for 18 months after moving from South Dakota. He originated the Whisker club noted in Washington's centennial celebration.
Two weeks after the final sound, Town Falls beat Eagle Grove 36 to 35. An Eagle Grove boy scored a basket as the final gun sounded. the scorer recorded it as in play, the timekeeper could not confirm. The Iowa high school athletic association review led Referee Chase Quinn to rule the basket invalid.
Pioneer Joe Bowers aged 70 marries Ya Mae Sutton aged 24 at Indiantown. The founder of the Seminole trading post era and known as Uncle Joe, is pictured kissing his bride after a hornblown ceremony to mark their marriage in Indiantown.
The United Mine Workers union delegates at Columbus approved endorsing a liberal presidential nominee if named by a united party at the Democratic National Convention. The executive board was urged to support Roosevelts third term if presented, though John L. Lewis noted Roosevelt is not expected to be a candidate.
Washington on January 31 reports a nationwide celebration of President Roosevelt's birthday aimed at raising 1.5 million dollars for the fund to combat infantile paralysis.
Anamosa Milling Co elevator, owned by Elmer Headlee, burned after a stove was blamed for the blaze. Firemen could not save the 35 year old structure. Loss estimated at $20,000 with $12,000 insured. 2,000 bushels of corn and other grain destroyed along with records and books.

Verne White Cedar Rapids and Lyman Hughes Des Moines were elected vice president and secretary treasurer respectively amid discussion of a federal securities inquiry by the senate monopoly committee led by M. J. Cleary Mil.
The Franklin township spelling contest took place January 26 at Franklin Center School with representation from all schools. In the advanced division Eugene Wead of Grant won first, Charlotte Young of Pleasant placed second, and Richard Applegate of Cedar was third. In the junior division Betty Kleese of Center won first, Phyllis Embree of Grant second, and Donald Bartholomew of Center third. Judges were Mrs. Maurice Libe, Mrs. Walter Longer and Miss Derthy Farrier.
