A fire destroyed the late Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver’s farm home near Fort Dodge Iowa with an estimated loss of about ten thousand dollars. No injuries were reported.
L Olivier and Vivien Leigh two film stars join the Shrine auditorium Des Moines stage for Romeo and Juliet on April 17. Leigh, famed for Scarlett O Hara in Gone With the Wind, tours Des Moines with the production now showing at a local theater.
Hart Grove of Hampton, Kansas owned a plane piloted by Dinsmore. They took off on Highway 63 but were forced down at the Ottumwa port north of the city due to exhausted gas. With airport attendants help, the downed craft was pulled from the snowbank onto the highway.
The University of Iowa announces its forty first summer session with an eight week teaching term and a three week independent study starting June 10. Tuition is 50 dollars for the teaching unit and 15 dollars for the graduate only independent study unit.
Kimo Mitchell received a three month jail term after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. His car became stuck in a snowdrift, drawing the attention of a highway patrolman who then saw to his arrest.

A Davenport district court suspended a six month sentence for Leo Leischner 27 Bettendorf after he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause great bodily harm toward his wife. Clark Filseth Scott county attorney said leniency was granted due to the wife's pleas. In December during a family dispute Leischner fired a shotgun at his wife as she held their baby she escaped unharmed.
DES MOINES Background on the 1941 Iowa license plates will be sedate white with black figures. Superintendent James Allen announced at a State executive council meeting that complaints about the orange plates led to a color change. The council awarded the contract to the Anamosa state reformatory at 4 1/2 cents per plate for 1,500,000 automobile and 185,000 truck plates.
A 17-year-old girl, Barbara Jean Griffeth, was seriously wounded in Des Moines when a single barrel shotgun in the hands of 16-year-old National Guardsman Harry Roberts discharged. Griffeth was taken to Mercy hospital with a severely injured right leg that may require amputation. Roberts said he was handling the gun and had just inserted a shell to test loading.
Washington January 30 The House Appropriations Committee approved a drastic cut in farm aid for 1941 to 634 million dollars, less than half of this year’s total. Agriculture Secretary Wallace warned the economy risks agriculture’s well being as a strong push for extra funds looms in both chambers. The measure cuts 666.8 million below the current year and 1.56 million under Roosevelt’s recommendation, contributing to 277 million in savings across five supply bills.
James Lockridge, a North English farmer, faced a costly accident when a horse was electrocuted after biting a wire above its stall. The incident cost about $200 and prompted him to raise the barn wiring.

Will and memorial plans by Mrs. Lora Hinkle set as park with landmarks but costs and tax relief threaten local funding and school system. Council also approves truck plate changes and black on white 1941 plates to save costs, and considers other items.
Graham company officials announce the Washington store will close with a closing-out sale. Ottumwa managers Swanson Tyler Anderson direct the sale, opening Friday at 9 am until merchandise is sold. Harry Dougherty and Art Lanning will remain with the company. former managers include Bowie Miller Clark Henderson Anderson Speas Schmitt George Binkert Dougherty.

Sessions opened with Brighton-Clay and English River draws. more townships scheduled through Thursday across Crawfordsville Cedar Center Dutch Creek and others.
Delegates to the United Mine Workers of America convention in Columbus charge Vice President John N Garner and his allies threaten the federal wage hour law. They criticize the wage hour administration for lax enforcement and seek larger funds to raise standards and enforce the law. The same session recalled John L Lewis accusing Garner of labor baiting and other personal attacks during hearings on amendments.
After jury selection and opening statements, evidence began in the Iowa case against John E. Walton accused of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. A witness testified to Walton’s collision with Zeno Knebel on the English River bridge on November 1939, with blood tests allegedly showing intoxication. Defense contends Walton was not intoxicated and questions the blood test's authority. The six men and six women jury includes Rose Reid and Maude Roberts, among others, and further jurors were excused for the term.

Four mules blocked a road north of Brooklyn forcing Marvin Calderwood to swerve his car. Unable to find sufficient room, he struck one mule and the animal was killed in the collision.
