Local thieves likely enjoyed a weekend as a tavern owner reported a 16 gallon keg of beer stolen. A 15-year-old waitress from Des Moines, Mrs. Meien Noland, refused to cooperate with Officer Joe Venonis, was jailed for disturbing the peace and sauceriering with an officer.
Residents of a Missouri borough were startled by flashes of lightning and loud thunder on Saturday. The temperature was 82 degrees with light rain and mist in the air.
MAWUOKETA. R A Stacey publisher of the Maquoketa Community Press says a Des Moines conference with Gov. Kraschel State Senator Chrystal and Stacey approved a project using Jackson county WIA labor to improve Maquoketa Caves State Park. About 25 men will be employed when weather permits.
Two year old Richard Scribner of Mason City spent an hour in the bathroom at his grandmother’s Minneapolis home. He knocked himself in and firemen were called to pick the lock so he could exit safely.
DES MOINES. Two year old Sally Brown daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Brown could not unlock a bathroom door. Firemen broke a second story window to free her after more than an hour of confinement.
An annual road school for county city and state highway engineers and contractors in Iowa was recommended by Prof. R. A. Moyer of Iowa State College. He said the best highway service comes when all engineers pool experience and exchange ideas, with farm-to-market road improvement a major Todd school topic.
Fire destroyed the Hartzler electric shop in Indianola with an estimated loss of 25000 dollars. Origin undetermined. Indianola Fire Department arrived as another blaze had just been reported. Over 760 gallons of water pumped. Will L. Hartzler operates a large public rental system.
Mason City reports quick thinking saved Mr and Mrs Merk from death after their car stalled on Rock Island tracks as a northbound Rocket approached. They leaped clear just before impact. the auto was damaged. A Renwick school bus eight blocks away had 10 lives lost last year.
J C Ham mond editor and publisher of Decorah Journal was named managing director of Iowa centennial plans. The committee headed by R Bahne selected Samuel Stump from the Dodge chamber as executive secretary and Mrs Della Harp of Des Moines as secretary. The observance marks the 10th anniversary of territorial admission with a $5 000 appropriation from the state fire board.
The United States reports a Japanese apology to Washington for the slapping of American consul John M Allison at Hawking. Japan says the commanding officer and 20 soldiers will face court martial. In Shanghai fierce fighting slows the Japanese advance toward the Longkou railway junction with Chinese forces described as agile and coordinated by foreign advisers.
An entertaining Baptist youth program opened with group singing and scripture read by Wayne Kendrick. Harold Walker offered the prayer as Paul Campbell performed trombone with Mrs. Charles McConnell assisting, followed by Kathryn Vacha’s interpretive readings and several musical pieces.
Francis Allbaugh fractured his shoulder yesterday while changing a canopy at the State theater. A slick ice and wind increased the ladder’s slip, and he was rushed to Washington County Hospital for X rays confirming the fracture. He is expected to stay under hospital care today focused on the shoulder injury.
Members of the State Farm Insurance agency force from in and around Washington will gather at the Congress hotel on Wednesday February 2 to hear B. Keffer, manager of the inland marine department, speak on hail and how it affects growing crops. Keffer is a noted authority on hail insurance.
Weather outlook for January 31 through February 5 covers upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and northern and central Great Plains. Expect considerable snow in central and northern areas and rain or snow in extreme south portions with temperatures mostly below normal in the north and near or below normal in the south.

Funeral services were held for Frank Kennard, 29, who died Saturday in a gun accident at his home ten miles north of Kalona. The Kalona Christian church hosted the service with burial in Sharon Hill cemetery. Survived by his mother and several siblings, he was a popular Kalona resident and Kalona high school graduate in 1926.
The adjourned delinquent tax sale at the county treasurer’s office saw no bidders this morning. Treasurer Marion S. George said the sale is postponed for eight weeks until March 28.
Albert Strohl 46 a WPA worker and father of six sits in Union County jail after confessing to shooting Floyd M. Keating 41 a railroad baggageman with a 1.50 shotgun. Keating remains at Greater Community hospital with 115 wounds to right side and forearms but is expected to recover. Authorities say the dispute arose over Keating caring for his four motherless children who had been living at Strohl's home. Strohl's wife is Keating's sister.
Mrs Harry Sowden visited Burlington with friends on Friday and Saturday, enjoying time in the city.
A series of late Saturday crashes in Washington county left one 12 year old Iowa City boy dead. Arthur Nebel 12 died after his father D W Nebel 54 was injured in a crash on primary road No 22 two miles west of Wellman. Nebel drove into a ditch to avoid another car, struck a culvert and a windshield shard fatally wounded Arthur. The father received multiple injuries and both were taken to Iowa City.
In Baarn Holland Prin Juliana gave birth to a girl baby the event greeted with 51 cannon salutes. The mother and child are well and the throne remains secure. Workers declared a holiday as the nation celebrated. If a boy had been born it would have affected succession and been named Willem Bernard George. The princess chose Juliana Wilhelmina Elizabeth Emma for the girl.
Manager Jim White of Washington Lumber and Fuel and John Winga of North Side cate said the yard will furnish lumber for the new rear addition to the existing restaurant dining room. Winga noted no other purchases or work are arranged yet. Lighting and painting plans will come later. Tables and chairs for the added room are already in storage.
A crash near Washington involved a Rock Island man and a Columbus Junction telephone company truck when a car stopped to avoid another. Four cars were in the vicinity. none were damaged seriously and no injuries were reported.
A severe cold snap grips Washington with a minimum of seven below zero and a Sunday high of 12 above. Ice-coated roads form hazards as drizzle freezes, causing numerous highway accidents and prompting motorists to stay off roads. The town clock stops from ice, and damage to lines is minimal but present. Denison records 20 below zero as northwest winds deepen the cold across the region.
The yellow eastern goldfinch was designated as Iowa's official state bird by the legislature at the urging of the Iowa Ornithological Union. The species is common in southern Iowa and slightly less abundant in the northern part of the state.
Chicago February 15 marks new service for Rock Island Lines with the Golden State Limited to Los Angeles by day and the Californian by night. The Rocky Mountain Limited shifts to 9:20 a m from 10:15 a m and returns from Denver at 4 p m arriving in Chicago 6 15 p m. The Rocket train to Kansas City and Denver is withdrawn from the Kansas City Denver route and moved to Kansas City Oklahoma City. Local service alterations occur on the same date.
Donald Simmering, plaintiff in the Simmering versus Hutt suit, testified on the witness stand as the automobile damage case reopened after a weekend recess. Jurors may hear closing arguments and defense presentations as the trial proceeds toward a possible jury verdict by late tomorrow afternoon.
A dangerous ice gorge at the mouth of the Nock river broke up today sending 150 families fleeing flood waters and washing out a power plant. Authorities warned low lands must be evacuated as the ice choke extended to Rockford.
Fire of unknown origin razed a large barn on the Joe Neary farm southeast of Emmetsburg. Thirty hogs, 20 tons of fodder, 10 tons of hay and farm equipment burned. One hundred farmers formed a four-bucket brigade by telephone and protected nearby structures despite subzero winds.
Mrs Andy Peterson came back Saturday afternoon from Fairfield where she had been called earlier in the week due to her sister-in-law Mrs J Simons illness. Mrs Simons fell and broke a leg and was moved from Fairfield hospital to the University hospital in Iowa City Friday.
