Cedar Rapids representatives of 60 local firefighters argued for two hours before the council urging a 5 to 10 percent wage increase. The heated meeting focused on securing a timely decision and avoiding further delays.
Des Moines Secretary of State Robert FE. O'Brian granted Lew Wallace, state motor vehicle commissioner, a second six month leave of absence effective February 15. Wallace is employed by the National Safety Council.
Council Bluffs printers tell candidates in the upcoming city primary that political printing must be paid in cash in advance. Five major print houses signed a letter stating that promises or deferred payments will not be accepted for campaign material.
Rural carrier B. Kck. Logan built a fire in his garage then went to the barn. A loud explosion blew the door open and he found the garage in flames. Two cars and assorted tools and materials were burned.
Des Moines reports Gill netters on Fast and West Okoboji lakes have paid 874 dollars in fishing through the ice percentages to the Iowa conservation commission this winter. The commission takes 25 percent of buffalo price and 10 percent of carp price, the only species allowed.
Rural mail carrier Pete MacDonald believed a skunk was alive as he approached a mailbox. He stepped closer and realized the animal was dead and had been placed there as a prank by a trickster.
Fairfield obituary notes Mrs. Sarah Catharine Smith died after a short illness at her daughter Mrs. J. P. Wood home. She celebrated her 100th birthday on July 18 1937. Interment is in Monroe City Missouri. Surviving: two daughters Mrs. J P Wood and Mrs Anna Ballard five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A dispute between the Scott county board of supervisors and the Scott County Medical Society over indigent care during 1938 concluded as the supervisors announced they do not intend to renew the medical society contract expiring at midnight Monday.
Floyd County farmer Myron D. Ziebarth chose eight days in jail over remaining free to seek work or fuel his family. He pleaded guilty to assault and battery on John Busch Floyd Consolidated School bus driver and was fined $100 plus costs by Justice Calvin M. Jones.
Waterloo reports plans by Harry M. Reed and CC A. Morris to purchase a 56 acre virgin timber tract at Cedar Heights. The site will be a forest reserve for Young Men's Christian Association groups.
A fraternity house at Cedar Falla-Lambda was quarantined after smallpox was found. Ralph Isbell and Stockton Jir. were removed to the State Teachers College hospital. About 20 residents were confined in the house under city and school supervision. Church Williams of Dallas Center presides Lambda Gamma Nu.
The W. K. Augustine farm south of Dublin features a 9 pin mortise cattle barn valued about $5,000. Designed by H. W. Mineart, it uses hedge pins instead of nails, with 128 braces and 1,000 hedge pins. The 44 by 6 box 26 structure includes five box stalls, a front porch, a large water tank, and two cattle sheds for 140 to 150 cattle. Mrs. Augustine aided with daily meals during the three month construction era.
Des Moines reports reveal the average taxpayer, with an income near 185 dollars monthly, paid 31.19 in taxes in January 1938. He spent 92.50 on taxable purchases, 16.58 on gasoline, over 5 on cigarettes, and about 2.59 on liquor from a state store, though he paid no property or income taxes that month. The figure notes his identity is being kept secret while monthly records continue.
The county treasurer reports 2826 cars had 1938 plates at January close, 80 fewer than Feb last year, with 482 trucks licensed now vs 450 a year ago. Mail-in applications may push totals over 4000. last year 4267. Delinquent penalties loom for about 1200 last-year owners, and storage notices reach 300. On March 15 the sheriff will pursue delinquent owners. All drivers with 1937 plates violate state law.

Jesse R. Busby a Washington clothier announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for county treasurer. He cites practical experience from banking and clerical work and a return to Washington in 1932 to join the Widmer & Busby clothing firm, signaling a crowded primary field ahead.
United States accident fatalities reached 106000 in 1937 with 75000 permanently disabled and 9400000 injured. The National Safety Council estimates the net cost of these accidents at 3700000000 dollars.
Lehigh Iowa February 1 firemen brought under control a $6,000 blaze that forced residents to flee in night clothes and threatened a downtown business area before containment.
Postmaster M C DeLong reported icy sidewalks have reduced residence mail deliveries in Washington this week. Business districts still receive two daily deliveries, while homes get only one. Carriers begin longer routes around 11 30 each day, pending walk conditions improving.

Funeral services were set for two o'clock this afternoon at Eicher church near Noble for Arthur Nebel a twelve year old Iowa City boy killed in a auto crash two miles west of Wellman Saturday. Burial was planned in Richer cemetery. Arthur’s mother Alice Roth is of Noble and his father drove mail on a star route Town City Webster. Surviving are Milton Wayland Mrs Amos Graber Wayland Dale Katherine Billy Raymond and the two who were at home. The family had lived in Noble before moving last fall. He attended Ficher church and Sunday school while living there.

Plaintiff attorney Dunham Morrison began the morning argument at 10 45 and continued past the noon recess as defense attorney S W Livingston and plaintiff attorney George F Morrison prepared to speak. The defendant testified earlier in the session.
