A Des Moines column notes an Iowa man awaiting the old age pension who asks for an investigator in early February to start benefits in March. The 64 or 65 year old describes living with his brother, keeping house, patching overalls, and cooking, seeking financial support.
Town resident Howard Graybill sues Ben Whitebook, local grocer, for $2,000 claiming arrest and search of him wife and brother after Whitebook believed a $6 bill was counterfeit. Graybill alleges wrongful seizure and harassment following the October incident.
Waterloo grocer Waterloo-Frank F. Clite was fined 25 dollars in municipal court in a test case under the state law banning aspirin sales by unlicensed druggists. The fine was suspended. Judge G J Sager cited an Iowa supreme court ruling that aspirin is a drug. Des Moines agent L V Carter said the case could start a wave of arrests.
Two psychology professors resign in successive days at the University of Iowa. Dr Christian Alban Reekmick announced his resignation on Friday amid friction over an emotion measuring meter. Dr Lee Edward Travis, who was department head, resigned on Thursday night as tensions rose within the department.
Ottumwa case records a suit by Burdette Bowne owner of the Ottumwatee Co. against W. B. Bonnifield former president of First Bank and Trust Co. Bowne seeks rescission of a stock note for about $12 000 tied to stock bought when the bank was the First National Bank now part of the First Bank and Trust Co. The matter was placed under advisement by District Judge R. W. Smith.
Des Moines Iowa W P A allotments totaling 207739 were announced in Washington by Senator Clyde L Herring and approved by officials. Projects include statewide 156250 to transcribe urban real estate transfers encumbrances and valuation trends Sioux City 9810 to clean and renovate public buildings and Polk County 41670 to assist in organizing library extension services.
A Marshalltown woman reports two youths at her door asking for food and kindling. When told to split the kindling and eat, one youth declared they are hitchhikers not laborers and cannot stop to split. The woman allowed them to leave.
Ralph Richard Zemanek, 17, of Dubuque, shot himself in the heart with a 22 caliber rifle in his attic. The high school sophomore had failed several subjects and was ineligible to graduate next June, a factor Dr. C Coady, coroner, cited as the cause. The parents were unaware of his classroom failures.
Washington industrial show at City Hall March 10 11 12. Leon Beatty post American Legion sponsors. Only five booths remain of 27 and expected to sell soon. Free acts planned four programs daily two in afternoon two in evening. Public admission planned.
Washington January 29 The president in excellent physical condition approaching his 56th birthday. His physician Captain Ross T. McIntyre says he has fully recovered from a November tooth infection and is in strong health.
A banquet for Allied Mills feed dealers and their wives was held at the Y M C A in southeast Iowa with over 75 attendees. Mrs. John Dodd catered, a group of girls assisted, cigars were distributed to men, and flowers given to women.
One of the main features of the new dining room at the North Side restaurant will be custom built linoleum flooring supplied by Scott Furniture company. The floor covering will be made to fit the room and harmonize with walls ceilings and furnishings. Scotts have previously furnished this flooring for the public library Phillips Hebner drug store and several residences.
State Commander James I. Dolliver of Fort Dodge speaks at a Katona meeting on the American Legion creed. He urges liberty by staying out of European and Asian entanglements and outlines a three point peace program including preparedness neutrality and universal service. He calls for education in Americanism and notes Legion youth camps and Boy Scout activity.
In Rome on January 29 a massive explosion at the Segni munitions works near Tivoli caused heavy casualties. Early reports say at least 100 dead and 300 injured as two blasts struck the plant, which employed 12 to 400 workers and was largely destroyed.
Two men tied to a farm directory advertising racket were arrested in Boonville Missouri after collecting over 200 from Washington merchants. The scheme aimed to sell ads for a directory and then vanish with funds, leaving advertisers with losses and no printed directory. Merchant faced Iowa charges and extradition, while Zimmerly awaited charges in Columbia and a third suspect Mrs Merchant was held there.
Luzon, an American river patrol gunboat, was hit by shrapnel from Chinese anti aircraft guns during a Japanese air raid in Hankow. The radio operator was slightly wounded. the vessel itself suffered no major damage. Separate reports from Shanghai claim Chinese forces repulsed a southern Tukow railway advance and recaptured Mengyin, signaling a potential setback to Japanese efforts in the Shanghai area.
Emma Jones, born July 14 1870 near Columbus Junction, died at Washington county hospital after a stroke four years earlier. Funeral at L A Jones funeral home with Dr F W Eastwood presiding. Survived by son Norwood Jones of Chicago daughter Hannah Paul of Washington and three grandchildren Sally Jack Jane. brother W F Jones Cotter. sister Hannah Elizabeth deceased 1906.
The Washington independent school district schedules a February 25 bond election to fund a new elementary building in the north part of town, replacing the Heights school in poor condition. The board certified the election after petitions with over 25 percent of last election voters were submitted. Polls run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall.
Tom Davis of Ainsworth shopped in Washington yesterday, highlighting a brief local travel note.
Judge J. G. Patterson halted the trial of Donald Simm ering versus Ray Hutt at four p m and adjourned court until 10 a m Monday. Plaintiff evidence was largely in, and jurors could hear verdicts late Monday or Tuesday. The suit seeks damages for injuries from a November 1 1936 auto collision between Washington and Ainsworth. The next case involves the state against Wilford Dawson for turkey theft with four co defendants who have pleaded guilty. County Attorney Richard A Stewart will prosecute and E D Morrison defends.
