Communists Call General Strike in Germany as Hitler Takes Helm

On January 31 Berlin reports show Communists and Socialists urging a general strike against Hitler’s government while he seeks parliamentary backing. Dock workers in Hamburg ignored the call, violence erupted in street clashes leaving two dead and several wounded as Nazis and foes clashed. The Ruhr district Communist committee urged a nationwide industrial protest with two thousand Berlin delegates mobilizing factory councils.

Masons Open Billiard Tourney with 30 Players

A Masonic lodge hosts a billiard tournament opening last evening at 7 16 with 30 members. Matches are two per night at 100 points each, drawings posted in the club rooms. Cuddy beat Gorham 100 94 and Carson edged Dewey 100 99 while afternoon games and the next match Gibson versus Wolf are planned.

Eminent Layman Bancroft To Speak At Methodist Meetings

Dow Bancroft of Columbus prominent Methodist layman on a southern Iowa tour will speak at two local events. A 3 PM roundtable at the Methodist church invites all, and a 6:30 PM family night dinner precedes his 7:15 PM address. The event is sponsored by the Methodist Men's club with Bentzinger of Mt. Y M C A Team Competes in State Tournament

Washington Y M C A basketball team travels to Ottumwa for the state Y tournament this Friday and Saturday. Pairings are awaited. The Y plans games with Eldon on Feb 6 at home and Feb 10 away, and is arranging with Burlington Naval Reserves for next month with dates pending.

City reports January aid total of 4444 meals

City hall announced January intake from the emergency kitchen run with Washington donors. Four hundred and thirty seven meals served to breakfast, dinners and suppers, plus 191 men lodged, 300 meals to transients, 3512 stew buckets to local homes, and 9590 quarts of milk distributed.

Famed English Novelist Galsworthy Dies at 65

London report states John Galsworthy dramatist and novelist died after a lingering illness at age 65. He contracted a chill last November and suffering from uremia, his death occurred with his wife and nephew at his bedside. The Nobel Prize winner produced about 20 novels and many plays.

Pancake Day Jubilee At City Hall Sees 27 Pancakes Eaten

Eight guests brought to the Pancake Day jubilee by Manager Norton enjoyed breakfast at the Washington county home. Arthur Skinny Pedman nicknamed Skinny ate 27 of Replogle's pancakes with Maxwell House coffee Washington butter and Sani tary dairy cream and Karo syrup.

City hall pancake sale feeds thousands in event

Crowds packed the city hall area through the afternoon for a pancake sale. Three alum drums plus a crew of chefs and servers produced thousands of cakes with coffee syrup and toppings, drawing hundreds seated and many standing in lines as 4000 people were expected and cars filled the streets despite muddy roads.

Prairie City man dies by poison in coffin shop

In Prairie City Iowa Dave Graham entered Ernest Walters funeral home and drank poison while a friend lay nearby on a couch near a coffin. The incident ends Graham's life, leaving question of motive and circumstances under investigation by local authorities.
