Pro-American Maj Gen Nguyen Khanh toppled the South Vietnamese junta in a bloodless coup to sweep away neutralists. Khanh, 36, commander of the 1st Army Corps, said he acted to prevent French-inspires neutralization and to keep South Viet Nam from neutrality. Minh and premier Tho were reportedly removed, with U.S. relations uncertain as the 15,000 U.S. troops in the country remained unaffected.
