The Iowa Senate approved a bill by 86 to 5 to allow Polk and Woodbury counties to levy a 5 mill poor fund tax in 1941 and 1942, boosting relief expenditures. The measure also renews authorization for all other counties to levy 6 mills in those years.
H H Scamiat lay in his Bremer county farm home near Weaver for seven days without food or water after a yard fall. Glen Lunberg and Walter Eickelberg searched a farm mistaken for sale, found him barely alive in a Schmidt farm yard under blankets and rugs.
David Sisk 96 sues in district court to annul his 65 year old marriage to Margaret Livingston later Mrs Sisk. He alleges she was legally incapable of contracting due to insanity after being committed to Mount Pleasant state hospital on Feb 24 1940 and paroled July 12 1940 but never cured. Co-defendant named is George Prosser.
J H Clifford 47 of Alton Illinois admitted illegal transportation of liquor after state patrolmen found 1100 pints in his car near Mount Ayr. District Judge Homer A Fuller fined him 3800 dollars. whisky and his 1941 coupe were seized. Clifford said the total cost of the deal was about 2500 dollars.
British forces report the capture of Derna in Italian Libya marking a Libyan advance as Hitler in Berlin vows to torpedo American aid and warns of German attacks this spring. He asserts Europe will defend itself and Italy remains allied with Germany amid rising Allied operations in Africa.
John Harry Griffith died at 3 45 PM in Washington county hospital after an operation for an abscessed appendix. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 30 PM at Jones funeral home with Rev. George Pennington. He was 19, born June 22 1921 in Wellston and a 1938 West Chester High School graduate.
The county treasurer’s office reminds automobile owners they must license cars and trucks for 1941 at the regular rate by Friday night to avoid delinquency penalties. By today 3,985 cars and 610 trucks are licensed, compared with 3,856 cars and 601 trucks last year, with expected totals over 4,000 by closing time.
Funeral services are announced for Mrs Henry J Glick who died Tuesday night at Long Beach California. The service is set for Monday afternoon February 3 at L A Jones funeral home. The funeral party will arrive Sunday night with interment at Elm Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Nels B. Westermark reports rising donations for the infantile paralysis fund in Washington County. About 65 dollars is on hand with 30 canvassers active and school drives pending, half stay local and half go to the national fund. Contribu tions range from one to five dollars with clubs and individuals snaring gifts.
Washington county selective board announces new classifications with 1-A ready for immediate call 1-B limited service 2-A deferred 8-A with dependents 4-D ministerial 4-F physically unqualified. Seven questionnairees sent for physicals. Two men bound for Fort Des Moines induction on Feb 20. Next week Feb 3 two men Kenneth Lovelett and Raymond Bower. Crum’s induction deferred after his father’s death. Fifty questionnairees awaiting classifications.
Edwin Griffith 34 of rural route one and William Jacobs of Sigourney collided on highway 42 at the West Chester curve yesterday afternoon. No injuries reported. vehicle damage estimated at about 200 dollars. Mrs. Ethel Stewart of Keota visited here yesterday.
Plan for a noon dinner meeting February 4 at North Side cafe private dining room. Farmers cooperating in TVA phosphate demonstration and soil conservation service demonstrations invited by Farm Bureau along with county editors and business groups. Bruce Kilpatrick and Jess Exline to speak on erosion prevention and conservation work in the county. Similar meetings occur in other counties adopting TVA program.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved the administration British aid bill with minor amendments and sent it to the House for debate possibly starting next Monday. The measure does not authorize navy convoying of supplies to Britain but preserves presidential control of naval use. The committee rejected an amendment to cap spending at two billion dollars. The Senate committee continued hearings with testimony from James W. Jarrard on security risks if Germany conquers Britain. Iowa Senate voted 41 to 5 to Refer lend lease support to Britain, party line, ending further consideration.
Mrs. Maude Schroeder, 65, long time Missouri resident, died in Trenton after illness and an operation in Topeka. Survived by daughter Mrs. Julia Langham of Dallas and stepchildren Walter Schroeder, Adolph Schroeder, Mrs. H H Jaster, and Mrs. Alexander Jaster. Funeral at Trenton today. Christian church member in Washington.
In Dubuque the national defense program has reduced g powder and ammunition needs, leaving Loras Academy rifle team idle and unable to fire a competitive match this season.
Mrs. C. W. Porter 76 died at 2:30 a.m. at her Brighton area home after a long illness. Funeral arrangements are pending with Frank Hoskins funeral home. Born Mary Elizabeth Whitacre in 1864 she married C. W. Porter in 1881 and moved to the family farm 48 years ago. She is survived by her husband, two sons Verle and a Moran Minnesota charity contact, a daughter Edith Buzzard of Brighton, and two grandchildren Glen Wentworth and Robert Porter.
Marion Timmins, Cedar township 4-H member, owns four purebred Ayrshire heifers obtained from Ness and Sons Alta Cres farms Fitch Dairy Farms and plans to exhibit them at the upcoming local 4-H achievement show and State Fair. He aims to add only a purebred sire and uses the stock to build a foundation dairy herd reflecting ten years in the 4-H program.
