Joe Anderson 70 a farmer near Madrid died at Iowa Lutheran hospital after amputation of his left leg last Saturday. His death was caused by gangrene from trimming a coin on his toe, the infection leading to his demise.
Webster City youths employed by the NYA walked out protesting the transfer of H. M. Wilkinson as project supervisor. Glen Boynton was recently appointed as supervisor, succeeding Wilkinson. A state NYA official instructed Boynton to stay on the job regardless of attendance.
Raymond Savage, 21, suffered serious injuries to his face hand and foot when an electric hammer he was using struck a dynamite cap at the Whittaker rock quarry near West Burlington. His right shoe was blown from his foot and rock fragments caused multiple wounds including two eyes.
John P. Burr, 80, president of Lone Tree Savings Bank, died at home from a stroke suffered while shoveling snow. A longtime farmer before joining the bank, he lived in the community 60 years and is survived by three daughters and two sons.
Rex Morris Briggs, 28, arrested as a fugitive from justice, faces federal charges for violating the Selective Service Act by failing to notify a draft board of removal from its jurisdiction. Authorities report a U S district attorney in Oregon is weighing the case.

Corydon Iowa officials announce an industrial pool to secure government orders for war materials. W C Moore of Seymour is chairman. Ernest Clayton of the Corydon Commercial Club says a local committee will cooperate. The pool aims to include small industries unable to win large contracts alone.
DES MOINES Four firemen were injured battling a blaze in the old part of Washington school shortly after classes ended. Teachers moved the few children still inside to safety as the alarm sounded. A smouldering roof section fell onto vertical space where the men fought the fire, trapping them under tin and joists until fellow firefighters freed them.
German long range guns reportedly shelling ten to twelve miles inland behind the Dover coast as Nazi air raids hit London. Obituaries note Rev A S Kresge of Meyersdale Pa died Jan 19 after a short illness and Mrs Roy Michener of Chicago formerly Miss Mary Foster died Jan 20. The community marked the president's birthday with a dinner and program at the community building. Local events included visits, a chimney fire at Gerald Breneman residence, and J S Blair healing from injuries after a icy path accident.
Swim Harvey Carter of Clarksville Jack Brierly of Waverly were thrown into the Shell Rock river when their boat was crushed by a mile long floe of ice.
A crash between drivers Max Curris and John R. Artkotten scattered about two hundred bushels of shelled corn on the highway near Red Oak. No injuries are reported.
