Henry Lynch a 56 year old Maytag Co employee narrowly escaped asphyxiation when city gas escaped from a basement line. He went down to fix a furnace fire during the night and was found the next morning on the outside steps. Firemen revived him with an inhalator.
In Cedar Falls three high school debaters were named outstanding speakers at the Brindley debate tournament earning four year scholarships to Iowa State Teachers College. The recipients are Abraham Arkoff of Fort Dodge Kenneth Thompson of Cedar Falls and Donald Weinhaugen of Ouiwein.
Carl B Sehle gal, 78, longtime president of the Tri City and Muscatine drug stores bearing his name, died after an 18 month illness in Davenport. He joined his father Gustave Sehle gal, founder of the first drug store in 1850, continuing the Davenport chain.
Morris Bassman 17 and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bassman narrowly escaped asphyxiation when gas fumes filled their two story house. Morris opened windows and alerted Ras company and emergency squad after a heater valve mix up. The gas entered from an upstairs room where a heater had been disconnected and the son traced the source.
Mrs Anna Elizabeth Wooley long ill due to advanced age died early today. Address 409 West Pith Street. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 at L A Jones funeral home with Dr R C Keagy officiating. Burial Crawfordsville Cemetery. Born Bethany West Virginia December 28 1850 to James A Mulhern and Sarah Elisabeth Russell. Moved Iowa 1865 then to Crawfordsville area. Married December 3 1888 to John Franklin Wooley. Survived by two sons Vanee Wooley East Moline Illinois and James W Wooley Ottumwa and four grandchildren.
The Washington county 4-H club held a Saturday evening event at the YMCA with 120 attendees. Activities included sign-in mingling, a 7:30 dinner, group singing, a talk by Bernard Flanders on the Ames state convention, a basket of performances, and a 4-H news paper preview for monthly issues.
Tokyo reports 186 killed and 69 injured in a gasoline engine driven train wreck near Osaki. The train had three cars and carried many factory workers. Rescue teams recovered 172 bodies.

Wayland obit reports John Wenger longtime farmer and livestock raiser died suddenly at 7:45 pm at his home near Wayland. Neuralgia of the heart listed as cause. Funeral plans arranged by Bollertonal home with service likely Wednesday at Sugar Creek church. He is survived by wife Katie Christner, five children, siblings, and grandchildren.

Lewis Vorel died this morning at seven at his home three miles south of Wellman after a brief illness. Born at sea on June 16, 1866 during his parents Austrian emigration, he married Florence Willson on October 20, 1890. Survived by his wife, he lived on the farm where he died. Friends may visit Sherman’s funeral home. body later cremated in Davenport.

Alden Schlosser, 34, struck and fatally harmed his two children in Middlefield Connecticut, set his one story frame house ablaze and then died by his own hand. His wife, 34, was bound and gagged with tape and dumped in the yard but was not injured. The house burned to the ground with the victims’ bodies charred beyond recognition.

Elijah Simkins died yesterday morning at eleven at the home of his son William, where he had lived for months after illness from influenza. Born August 22, 1865 in Salem New Jersey, he left six children in Iowa Montana Oregon and Mason City. Funeral arrangements were set for Mason City with burial in the Simkins family plot. he was a Methodist.
Forrest Brinning pleaded guilty in district court before Judge James P. Gaffney to operating a motor vehicle and was sentenced to pay a $500 fine plus costs. His attorney sought leniency and County Attorney Richard A. Stewart supported it. The judge warned the defendant to be careful in the future. Later that day jurors were being selected to try John K. Walton of Iowa City for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Funeral services for Shan Cleary, an elderly Washington resident, were held at 2:30 this afternoon at L. A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev. H. J. Corcoran of St. James Catholic church. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery. Cleary had lived on West Madison street and spent about 24 years at the county home. no known relatives survive.
Soviet bombs struck a Red Cross military hospital on the Karelian Isthmus killing 23, including four women. Most dead were wounded soldiers. seven rescued remained after the center of the building burned. The hospital, clearly marked with the Red Cross, was hit as planes swooped low and ignited the structure within minutes.
Rudolph Knottnerus 34 of Highland township died Saturday in a hospital at Iowa City after heart illness. Funeral at 2 pm Tuesday in Riverside Methodist church with burial in Riverside cemetery. Survived by wife Hilda Prymek and three sons Robert Donald George. brothers Remicius and Jacob. sisters Melo Lasek and Mrs Charles Brown. and his father Remicius T Knottnerus. His mother died in 1931.
Albert Harry Givens 82 died suddenly at home near Washington after a lingering cold and influenza. Funeral at L. A. Jones chapel led by Rev. Carl W. Klein of St Pauls Evangelical Reformed. Burial in Richland Friends Cemetery. Survived by wife Elva Johnstone, son Ted Givens, and two daughters Mrs. Martin Telford and Mrs. Clarold Anderson. Born West Liberty Iowa November 27 1857.
