The Selective Service office in the Evening Journal building will close Monday while Mrs. Louise Engel travels to Des Moines on official business. The office will reopen for normal hours on Tuesday.
Ottumwa policewoman Shirley Campbell was found guilty by a Wapello County jury of embezzling 73 dollars from the city police association fund during her tenure as treasurer. She originally faced 250 dollars in charges. The Campbells also face an unrelated charges in Keosauqua justice court today for false drawing and uttering bad checks.
Boyd Caster, operator of Boyds, with help from the Iowa Civil Liberties Union, files suit to void a city ordinance banning films in taverns. The December law aims to bar obscene films but bans all films, forcing venues to stop showing classic comedies like W C Fields and Laurel and Hardy.
Rep Neal Smith said dog food labels show protein content while human food labels lack equivalent detail. He urged stronger federal effort to inform all Americans about which foods supply the most nutrients, warning that many Americans, including the poor, are undernourished due to information gaps.
