Judge sentences Houston for grand larceny at Arco theft
Judge L. R. Carson sentenced Joseph Paul Houston to ten years in Ft. Madison State Penitentiary and fined the cost of prosecution. Houston was found guilty of grand larceny in the nighttime by a jury on December 15, 1971, for stealing chemicals from Arco Chemical Company in Ainsworth months earlier. Appeal bond was set at $5,000.

A 20 year old Washington man pled guilty to larceny for stealing fixtures from the Nativity scene in Central Park in December. Judge Ira F Morris imposed a one year suspended sentence with supervision by county sheriff's officers. Two other young men with similar charges remain free on bond.

Paratrooper Daryl John Dies in Frogmore Sky Dive
Marine Sgt Daryl Allan John, 22, of Burlington Iowa, was killed in Frogmore South Carolina after his two parachutes failed to open during a sky dive. Witnesses reported the main chute did not deploy and the reserve tangled with it. John and Vance Motley, both with the Cool Blue Skydiving Club of Beaufort, had jumped earlier.

Bright falling light sighted over Henderson County
Four Henderson County residents reported a bright light in the sky Sunday night. The FAA in Chicago traced the report to a falling star observed by a Moline air traffic controller. A local farmer said his daughter and her boyfriend saw a bright light near Gladstone around 10 p.m. Police searched the area but found no plane.

Two teens die in head-on crash on Highway 1 near Kalona

Washington City Council Drops East Monroe Street Improvements
The council eliminated planned curb and gutter work on East Monroe Street from South Second to South Sixth Avenues and dropped East Monroe Street improvements from the 1972 program. It approved other 1972 street plans in a special Friday meeting. The West Fifth Street paving will be assessed at 22 feet with the city covering 9 feet. residents pay for 6 of 7 inches of pavement thickness while the city funds the remaining inch.
