The Washington City Council will convene at 7:30 p.m. in city hall council chambers to finalize plans for the 1972 street improvement program. The session was moved from Monday night to tonight.
About 300 junior high and high school musicians from over 50 schools gather in Washington on Saturday January 29 for the Southeast Iowa Honor Band Festival. Two festival bands perform at Washington Junior High School at 7 30 p.m. with admission set at one dollar for adults and fifty cents for students. Directors are Dr. Alex Pickard of the University of Missouri and Jack Oatts of Jefferson High School, Jefferson Iowa.
The annual meeting is set for February 11 at 6 30 p m at the Captain's Table. Stephen Viggers, president, announces Congressman Fred Schwengel will speak on restorations in Washington D C and on Lincoln history, noting his authority on the subject and his role as president of the D C historical society.
Robert Bates, a Washington attorney, was appointed to one of two vacancies on the Washington County Selective Service Board. He replaces Charlie McAvoy who retired in November after 20 years on the board. One position remains open and officials continue to seek a second member.
Police say a state parolee was arrested at a supermarket Wednesday night for uttering a forged instrument after a bad check at a different store Monday. Merchants were warned Tuesday and the man, identified only as a local man on parole, was jailed following another alleged fake check attempt Wednesday.
The official weather observer reports the temperature in Washington fell to at least 15 degrees below zero during the night. Four inches of snow fell Thursday into Friday, but state, county and city crews worked to clear roads and haul away snow. Bright sunshine this morning offered hope for better days ahead.
A Cedar Rapids fire killed Helen Thorton 26 and two children Orville III 3 and Preston Revilla 5. Orville Jr. escaped unharmed. A passing motorist reported the blaze around 4:30 a.m. and investigators probe the cause.
The Community Chest meeting is set for Tuesday February 1 at 8 p.m. in the YMCA Community Room east end. A 1971 financial report and a campaign summary will be presented while five new directors are elected to three year terms. Representatives of participating agencies and any interested persons are urged to attend.
Iowa leaders give court 20 days to produce a constitutional reapportionment plan or face delaying the June 6 primary. If no plan by February 15, officials say the primary and filing deadline will be postponed and elections moved. Supreme Court has started work but may miss the deadline.
UPI report notes farm officials study new measures to cut corn and feed grain output amid bumper 1972 acreage plans. Humphrey urges action to tighten controls or Congress may step in. Officials consider paying farmers to divert extra acreage and limiting plantings. Crop intentions show corn at 70.0 million acres, soybeans 44.3 million. livestock feeds down overall.
Julie Towers, a 19 year old waitress at Copper Penny in Fort Lauderdale, serves coffee to a woman and two men at 5 am. The bill is 94 cents. A man tips $150 and praises her, asking her to keep it. She calls police to escort her home.
The Iowa Employment Security Commission reports a 21.4 percent increase in unemployment benefits for 1971, rising from 29.5 million to 35.7 million as weeks paid grew by about 100 000. The trust fund fell to 109.4 million by year end from 122.7 million. Jobless veterans received nearly 4.9 million, about double 1970.
More than 400 people packed the Knights of Columbus Hall for the 20th annual Washington County Beef Producers Association banquet despite a four inch snowfall. Iowa Beef Producers president Baxter Freese praised cattle prices, a new Ames beef facility, and planned promotions to Philadelphia New York and Spain, while urging merger of Iowa beef groups and repeal of the yearling feeder tax. Raymond Lasek presided. county officers and directors from Riverside Kalona Washington Ainsworth Crawfordsville and West Chester attended.
Senator George S. McGovern released a personal financial statement showing net assets of 271600 dollars and income of 89100 dollars for 1971. He lists total assets at 353200 and liabilities at 81600, dominated by homes in Washington and St. Michaels and a 52800 dollar checking account.
UPI reports that air bags may be up to four times more effective than seat belts, potentially protecting occupants in crashes up to 110 miles per hour. Tests at Philadelphia and Holloman AFB support strong protection, with air bags inflating instantly to cushion occupants.
United Press International reports Iowa will see increasing cloudiness and milder temperatures tonight with lows from zero to ten below. Saturday brings variable clouds and a warmer fade with daytime highs between ten and twenty.
Representatives from the office of Ernest Lund, Washington County Assessor, are conducting personal property assessments in Washington and Kalona. Taxpayers may visit field stations at Kalona city hall or Dr McCreedy building to complete assessments and sign for eligible exemptions. Hours are 9 am to 4 pm on most days, with extended evening hours on weekends and a noon close on Saturdays.
Two young policemen were shot fatally by three gunmen outside a lower East Side restaurant while on foot patrol. Patrolman Gregory W. Foster, 22, died almost instantly, and his partner Rocco Laurie, 23, died early today at Bellevue Hospital after surgery. Foster and Laurie were the first city officers killed in the line of duty this year. 13 were killed last year.
A survey of over 1,000 educators shows updating the Iowa school code as the leading legislative priority for 1972. pension reform and a collective bargaining bill follow, with ISEA members favoring pension improvements first by a close margin.
