In Cedar Rapids the young men's bureau of the Chamber of Commerce has renewed plans for a municipal swimming pool. With 5800 in the fund, directors approved submitting a 5000 bond issue to voters at the March election to cover construction costs.
Iowa 4-H staff and extension agents begin a national study on 4-H program effectiveness in Polk, Jasper, Clarke, Black Hawk and Webster counties. Leaders and members will answer questionnaires as surveys proceed in four counties this week.
Crowe 84 president of the First Nations bank hire and its sole surviving original stockholder died Friday. He is survived by his wife and two sons H. Crowe of Clarion secretary of the Iown Cloth for a association and A L Crowe of Beverly Hills Cal. Glen Wilson of Oskaloosa was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to illegal possession. The arrest marks the fifth this month for transporting Illinois liquor into Iowa.
DES MOINES State bureau of investigation agents announced positive identification of James E. Charleson 21 as the bandit who held up the Aetna Savings bank at Melntire last Oct 27. Charleson a Minnesota youth with a criminal record at St. Cloud already faces a murder charge in Chattanooga Tenn where he was arrested after a gun battle in which his companion and a detective were killed.
A 21 year old mother Olive Wisdom and her two young children along with her six year old sister Janice died in a frame house fire. The mother’s year and a half old daughter was found beside a bed with the other child, a nine month old boy, while Fred Steel, 360, who lived in a shed nearby, suffered serious burn injuries as flames spread to his shelter.
Des Moines January 27 Attorney General Fred Everett ruled that the federal government may build a dam on state owned land without state approval. The Coralville project near Iowa City faces opposition from the conservation commission over lake and park damage and farmland loss. The AG said federal authority to condemn land is defined by statute, requiring no state approval.
Iowa City groups including Cottage Reserve Club at Lake MacBride, the Junior and Senior Chambers of Commerce, and local labor unions expressed support for the Coralville dam and flood control project. They urged the conservation commission and Governor Wilson to cooperate, stressing protection for Lake MacBride recreation facilities and plans to gather about 5,000 petition signatures.
Helsinki Jan 27 UP Russian troops renewed their offensive northeast of Lake Ladoga and suffered heavy losses with detachments said to be entirely cut to pieces. A Russian submarine was destroyed in a Finnish mine field. Finnish sources claim the battle is developing into a Russian defeat after seven days of attacks with no gains. The Finna assess that the Russians attempted to outflank the Mannerheim line, but the offensive should now be deemed a failure.
Mrs. Rose Agnew of Tiffin appealed to Iowa’s supreme court from a $500 fine and conviction for maintaining a liquor nuisance at the club S in Johnson county. She argued no evidence linked the club to an offense and noted the case arose from a series of Johnson county tavern raids last summer.

Billy Cox directed the production and prepared it for broadcasting as part of WSUI’s children’s program lineup. Earlier at 7 there is Alice in Wonderland dramatization by Billy Cox.
