Two youths charged in derailment of train
Two boys aged 12 and 14 admitted to police they threw an old automobile railroad axle across a frog switch causing a powered section car to derail near Nishnabotna River in Cass County. One man riding the car had a portion of his foot amputated. four others were uninjured. The youths are in Cass County juvenile authorities.

Fire crews quell smoke at Hamilton home in Springfield
Firemen answered a call at 712 South Avenue C around 11 30 a m today to Henry Hamilton residence. Mr Hamilton found the house full of smoke upon returning home. Woodwork and rug near the stairs damaged. major fire was averted by quick firemen work and Mr Hamilton arriving before flames spread. He said he may have dropped a cigarette lighter that morning which stayed open and smoldered the rug.

Escapee seen in Iowa City amid manhunt
A police chase near downtown Iowa City ended when Officer Ray White attempted to stop a taxicab occupied by Chester Gott, 24, who escaped after failing to produce identification. Gott was among eight men who fled the Anamosa reformatory on January 9, while five were recaptured the next day.

Jury verdict favors defendant in suit
A district court petit jury ruled Wednesday for the defendant in a $100,000 damage suit filed on behalf of Paul Louis Owen, a minor, over a Sept 22, 1963 collision near West Chester. William T. Russell of Washington owned the car. Ann Louise Russell was the other driver. Local attorney L. J. Kehoe helped defend with a Des Moines firm. plaintiff’s lawyers were from Oskaloosa.

Winter storm whips across the East with seven dead
