DES MOINES Iowa reduces February tire quota for autos and trucks. Robert R Adams state rationing administrator notes new limits tighten tire availability for eligible Iowa buyers in February. Tube quotas shift with autos down and trucks up. No difficulties reported in rationing or regulations.
At the Hotel Savery a panel of about 30 health service directors heard Dr. Walter L. Bierring outline major problems. He cited personnel shortages as doctors nurses and engineers join the armed forces and expand public health duties.
Ottumwa police and Police Judge A R Swart adopt stricter policy on traffic violators. Overtime parking fines start at 1 dollar and rise by 1 dollar for each repeat offense. Police Chief Carl M. Higdon says the goal is to regulate downtown traffic, not raise money.
Superintendent W Z Carroll received a note from Coach Shoemaker stating he is witnessing an operation and will return for Friday's game. The coach is a patient at Onawa hospital after an appendectomy on Monday. Dr J S Deering said he will be back in school Friday.
Crystal Lake resident Jack Barrett, 44, died at a local hospital from injuries after his car collided with a pickup driven by Ranke Reikena of Crystal Lake at an intersection two miles southwest of Crystal Lake. Barrett was with C. R. Kellogg and Henry Martingon of Woden. Barrett's wife and three daughters survive.
The federal power commission hearing on the First Iowa Hydro-Electric Co-operative dam permit near Moscow enters its third week with termination expected Wednesday. Paul Houser of Des Moines testified for the state on pollution data from dams and their effect on aquatic life.
Peggy Gohlinghorst 22, hos pitalized 99 days after an auto accident, funds the paralysis fight by placing a collection box for visitors to donate.
A three story Glatstein furniture store in Muscatine was wrecked by a $35,000 blaze. Owner Harry Glatstein said some of the loss is covered by insurance. Fire Chief Harold Beirmen reported the cause undetermined and Fireman Robert Evans was overcome by smoke.
Street improvement bonds amounting to 6468.97 were sold by the city of Wastipeem last night at the Wallihe. The National Bank of Washington acted as the high bidder with a four percent interest rate and a 100 premium paid by the purchaser. Three bidders competed, including Des Moines concerns, and the issue was issued in anticipation of special assessments for street improvements in Washington from last year.
Major General James E Chaney was placed in command of the American expeditionary forces in the British Isles. The first major unit landed in northern Ireland yesterday. Chaney has led the United States army air corps in London and has been active in modernizing air defense since World War II began in Europe.
Charles Kennedy, secretary of the Washington County Farmers' Mutual Insurance, outlined the 1873 founded company with 21 million dollars in force for farm property and loss settlement challenges. Frank Miller discussed war limits on rural electrification and appliance maintenance amid enlistment prospects. 44 Iowa Southern Utilities workers of service age may be called. Dr. Fred Eastwood and Kenneth Freeman were honored with roses for birthdays, while Miss Margaret Moberly joined as a new commercial teacher guest. The Rotary club reported 100 percent January attendance.
U P Chairman Harry S Truman told the Senate Naval Affairs Committee that congressional action is needed to curb lavish profits on naval construction. He cited naval officials and shipbuilders noting little navy interest in saving money and said bonuses of 1.80 per employee were paid under cost plus fixed fee contracts, including a company employing 35 000 workers.
The high school audience heard Charles D Hurvey this afternoon and praised his excellent voice and clear information on South America. He will speak again tonight at eight o clock in the high school, with a large crowd expected.
Chairman G E Mace announced a house to house canvass on February 4 and 5 to raise Washington county's $3900 Red Cross war relief quota. The county committee, including R E Dougherty and S W Livingston, will organize solicitors to reach every family. County-wide drives target the national $50 million fund and urge substantial gifts from many families. A list of contributors was reported with $167 from Crawfordsville and $160 from Kalona plus smaller donations.
Available information on American forces in northern Ireland suggests Washington county soldiers are likely present. Washington men who trained at Camp Claiborne Louisiana have been shipped to Ireland, with others from the county possibly in the army there, and many originate from the middle west.
A jury is impaneled in Washington county for Blanche Greiner administratrix versus W P Hicks over a June 28 1938 Downers Grove Illinois automobile accident that killed Daniel Greiner and another man. Depositions will be used. first witness J R Mitchell described arriving at the scene.

Rio de Janeiro January 27 The emergency conference of American foreign ministers postponed closing until six p m tomorrow as Argentina and Chile press Brazil to delay a break with the axis. Formal approval of measures to expel axis influence was to be taken today. Senate officials expect Brazil to reverence axis ties at closing, while Argentina and Chile urged postponement until after their elections.
Nine Gray-Y club members from Stewart and Lincoln schools received awards for pledges to the American and Christian flags. About 50 boys are enrolled as the four fold program focuses on education, religion, physical training, and service under Dr. W. D. Dwyer with Charles Mayo Ira Morrison Jack Longer and Bill Maas directing. Recipients: Stewart Charles Gristwell Robert Wagner Harold Schmidt Lincoln Paul Brock Dick Green Ted West Jack Tanner Dan Holland Jack Fields.
The Washington county AAA office asks township committee chairmen to report seed bean supplies. Farmers with beans suitable for germination are urged to save them for seed rather than selling for processing to ensure adequate seed stock for the planned acreage.
