Thelma May McCann six year old of Spirit Lake was struck and killed on highway 71 while crossing from kindergarten. Driver Glen Williamson said he stopped almost immediately after seeing her dart into the street. This marks Dickinson County's first 1942 vehicle fatality.
The Iowa Congress of Parents and Teachers executive board approved a resolution urging enactment of a state law to establish aid to dependent children. The measure would apply to Iowa’s defense efforts and seeks to safeguard national children. federal aid is administered by the Social Security Board, but state law is needed to implement the program.
The United States Department of Agriculture reports that wheat will substitute for corn in government grain contracts for alcohol production after March 1. Wheat will be offered to processors while corn remains available, but wheat sale is prioritized to conserve corn for livestock feeding.

The marine recruiting office said it will accept married men who provide an affidavit from dependents showing other support. This marks the last branch of the armed forces lifting the bar on married enlistment.
In Hayden Colorado a mile long shaft at the Wadge mine suffered a gas explosion that killed 34 miners. Four of 38 night workers escaped as a six man rescue team battled to reach the bodies with masks and oxygen tanks. The Victor American company operates the mine in the Colorado Rockies near Denver.
Willis G C Bagley of Mason City announces re election bid for Treasurer of State stating his track record. John Ford of Carlisle declares Republican candidacy for Secretary of State in the June primaries noting farm ownership and envelope business and pledging an economical administration.
A federal grand jury indicted three American citizens and three Japanese nationals for distributing pro Japanese propaganda in alleged violation of the foreign agents registration act. Americans named are Ralph Townsend of Lake Geneva Wise, David Warren Ryder, and Frederick Vincent Williams of San Francisco. Japanese nationals include Tsutomu Obana secretary of the Japanese chamber of commerce in San Francisco K Takahashi and J Takeuchi managers for Nippon Yusen and Mitsubishi in San Francisco.
Lecturer Charles D. Hurley told Washington high school students that nine Latin republics have war aims aligned with the United States and that a Pan American highway and rapid travel bind the regions. He noted Latin trade neared one billion dollars as war speeds up pan American unity amid cultural links and shared defense concerns.

Washington county prepares for the third nationwide manpower census to be held February 16. Chief registrars and locations are named for towns including Washington City Hall Riverside Wellman and Kalona with about 1,300 expected to register. If unable to on February 16, men may register February 12 or 14 at the selective service office.
Major Putnam who led air defense at Wake Island was captured by Japanese forces after the island fell, leaving Allied defenses in disarray as authorities reported his detention.
Wilbur Schramm professor of English and founder of the Writer's Workshop at the State University of Iowa will leave Iowa City today to serve for the duration of the war under the office of emergency management. He is to be assigned to the office of facts and figures directed by Archibald MacLeish.
The white population of the United States would have to produce 500,000 more babies annually to make the white birth rate of 17.5 per 1,000 equal the rest of the population.
Mrs Sarah Ann McCaleb Simpson aged 92 died at 7 10 a m at the Lee Norris home in Ainsworth after a heart attack. Born March 28 1849 in Cumberland County Pennsylvania she moved to the county at age 20 and to Ainsworth in 1885 with husband George Simpson. She was the last surviving member of 180 McCaleb siblings. Funeral Friday at 2 p m in L A Jones chapel Washington conducted by Rev John Nye with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Surviving nieces and nephews include Leo Lyle and Gene McCaleb of San Francisco George McCaleb of Ames and Mildred McCaleb of Ainsworth.
A meeting of Washington county Farm Bureau leaders was held yesterday to plan the year’s activities and budget. Two Iowa State College specialists from Ames gave advice on the program including nutrition lessons for the women’s department. A concurrent meeting with the farm defense board chaired by Carl Olfield focused on the Blood for Freedom campaign in the county.
