Gov George A Wil son as commander in chief told first regiment officers in Council Bluffs that Iowa needs a state guard to carry on the national guard tradition. Col Gerald W Caughlan presided at the Hotel Savery officers school as the southern half of Iowa organized to march forward with duty and pride.
Vernon Mutti 18 of Davenport Iowa was killed when a stolen car he rode in crashed on Highway 6 near Durant. The vehicle went off the road, struck a bridge abutment, and landed on its left side pinning Mutti. Companion Richard Borden 17 escaped with minor injuries after the crash occurred about 2 am Sunday.
Forty female students at Iowa State College are taking an experience based ambulance driving class sponsored by the student defense council. The group was chosen from 250 applicants and is supervised by Dr. A R Lauer from the psychology department. Classes meet twice weekly after school with no college credit awarded.
Soybean producers, processors and users are invited to a special soybean program February 9 during Farm and Home Week at Town State College. H. D. Hughes, head of the farm crops department, says the meeting highlights soybeans' role in the food-for-freedom program.
Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard cites an Iowa pattern of farm consolidation with displacement estimates around 2,000 farmers statewide last year. He notes land shifts exceed 370 000 acres from smaller holdings to farms of 500 acres or more between 1930 and 1940, signaling growing consolidation and fewer farms to rent.
The White House said further action on Admiral H. E. Kimmel and Lt. Gen. Walter C. Short rests with War Secretary Henry L. Stimson and Navy Secretary Frank Knox. Congress had demanded trials and unification of commands after the Roberts report's critique of Hawaii preparedness for Pearl Harbor. The expected step is improved army navy coordination rather than immediate indictments.

Automobile and truck owners have one extra week to license vehicles for 1942 without the five percent interest penalty due February first. County totals show 3938 cars, 654 trucks, and 136 more trailers licensed than a year ago, with reminders to bring old plates in before February 1 to avoid this year’s fee.

The Evening Journal reports defense savings stamps sales by carrier boys rose about 10 percent from the previous week. Total stamps sales were $129.10, plus $112.50 in defense bonds credited to one carrier for merit award. Jimmy Kaster leads with $121.00 in total sales, Ralph Schilling remains second at $51.50, and Jack Pauls rises to third.
Captain Howard P. Miller reports 42 men enlisted in the headquarters company of Iowa’s first state guard regiment now organized in Washington. Sixty more are needed to muster the unit this week. Miller will accept enlistments at the Lezion rooms in city hall this evening Tuesday and Wednesday. Colonel G V Coughlan of Council Bluffs will visit Washington Tuesday to discuss local matters with Miller.
The Washington County Ministerial association met at the YMCA at ten this morning to hear a defense program. Speakers included Eri. D. Morrison Jr., Richard McCleery, M. C. DeLong, QC. EB. Schmitt, Roger Sherman, and Dr. R. C. Keagy led devotions. Twenty three ministers attended. The program committee planned the year’s remaining activities.
Mayor R L Lytle and E A Ralston superintendent of schools back the annual infantile paralysis fund drive. County chairwoman Mrs Nels Westermark leads the effort with a city chair in each of twelve towns and Mrs William Sitler directing Washington in the Nicola and Harmon store area. The pledge emphasizes the epidemic nature of the disease and the March of Dimes as the yearly appeal for aid and action.
Representative Hamilton Fish and Melvin Maas urged a complete congressional investigation into the Pearl Harbor attack. They criticized the Roberts board of inquiry as vague and faulted the lack of contact between Pacific Fleet and Washington. They urged accountability and better Army Navy cooperation.
The House Appropriations Committee approved the naval appropriations bill totaling 17 722 565 474 dollars for fiscal 1943 and 1942 supplemental funds. It aims to give the United States naval supremacy with large increases in tonnage and fleet repair. The measure follows a 12 5 billion army airplane grant approved days earlier. The program is described as stupendous and will be debated on the House floor.
Funeral services for Mrs. Harry G. Moore will be held at 2 o clock Wednesday at Sherman's funeral home with Rev. George Kerr of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial is in Elm Grove cemetery. She died yesterday at her daughter’s home in Council Bluffs after a lingering illness. She leaves a daughter Mrs. Myrtle Moth in Council Bluffs, a grandson, two sisters and two brothers.

Twelve members of the Iowa highway safety patrol honored former Secretary of State Mrs. Alex Miller with a graveside ceremony at Elm Grove cemetery on the death anniversary January 24. Participants from Cedar Rapids Ottumwa Marengo Washington Des Moines and otherities attended along with Mrs. Miller's sister and Elder family members coffee and cake followed. Patrol leader C B Day praised Mrs. Miller for her leadership establishing highway safety patrol traditions and ideals.
