Genevieve Walter Wade of Atlantic filed for divorce from James Robert Wade of Des Moines after alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. The suit, not until she filed, reveals their marriage in Bethany, Missouri on December 10.
In Waterloo 400 acres of Black Hawk county farms sold for 40000 dollars to Kerr and others, including Walter Kerr and Alice Kerr, with two 160 acre tracts and a 40 acre remainder. In Charles City Dr Newman died after swallowing chicken bone though he had been in an auto crash on December 18, 1959. The autopsy concluded the bone would have caused death regardless of the collision.
J Rasmussen pioneer Spencer dry goods merchant probate Thursday detailing an estate valued between 125000 and 150000. More than 65000 goes to charities and small bequests to relatives friends and former associates. Remainder settles to Spencer Municipal Hospital for a children's ward and a 4000 gift for a maternity ward in memory of Ida Rasmussen.
In 15 below zero with wind, Burton Paul rushed his wife toward Newton hospital but the car stalled in a snowdrift. At 6:30 a.m. an 8 pound 10 ounce son was born to Mrs Paul six miles northeast of Newton. Both mother and baby were reported doing fine.

John Kaufman 76 prominent farmer and stock buyer died at his home northwest of Wayland after months of heart trouble. Funeral services at Wayland Mennonite church Sunday at 2:00 PM, Roller funeral home in charge, burial in Eicher cemetery near Noble. Survived by three sisters Mrs Eicher and Mrs Arnold and brother Peter.
The American legation in Stockholm urged all Americans in Sweden to consider returning to the United States at the earliest time. The letter was sent to between six hundred and seven hundred Americans in Sweden.
The jury in the King’s Hotel motor vehicle accident suit returned with a verdict after five and a half hours. Judge James P. Giefney ordered the sealed verdict read when court resumes Monday. The jury awarded the plaintiff $200. damages of $5,000 were asked.
Iowa's January 1939 highway fatality toll fell by 15 from December 1938, with 66 deaths and 965 injuries reported. The study highlights drinking-related crashes nearly doubling, with 286 alcohol involved accidents, and cites carelessness and road hogging as principal causes. Public Safety officials urge drivers to be safer and more courteous to cut fatalities and injuries in half.

Des Moines report states Iowa spent 8.75 million dollars on motor vehicles and trailers in December 1939. Use tax receipts total 174,949 dollars, up 17,488 from December 1938, with 1,556 dollars from Washington County and 985 dollars from Jefferson County.

An explosion at the Mjoendalen cellulose factory in Oslo today killed two and injured about 50 people including eight women and seven children. Twenty six of the injured are in serious condition. experts warn the gas may become deadly again when warmer weather thaws frozen fumes. Neighbors panicked and fled by car and on foot.

Norman Baker, 56, Eureka Springs hospital operator and former Iowa politician, received four years in prison and a $4,000 fine for mail fraud tied to advertising his cancer treatment as a guaranteed cure. Judge Thomas Trimble imposed the sentence after denying a motion for a new trial. A A Bellows, 62, hospital superintendent, drew two years, and Dr J L Statler, 56, technical adviser, one year and a day.
The steamship City of Flint nears Baltimore harbor after a voyage that took it from New York on a supposed cargo run to Europe. Officials boarded to collect the payroll for 40 American sailors unpaid for over three months since leaving New York.

Senator Burton Wheeler of Montana called on President Roosevelt to announce within a short time whether he will run again. Wheeler spoke at the United Mine Workers of America golden jubilee convention in Columbus, noting unemployment as America's top problem and proposing a national conference of leaders to craft solutions. Wheeler indicated he would support Roosevelt if he seeks re election.
Keota Iowa January 26 Mrs Cora B Coffman 74 of Keota died in a Marshall Minnesota hospital yesterday morning. Funeral services will be held at Marsh funeral home Keota Sunday at 2 pm with burial in Keota cemetery. Survived by son Dewey Coffman LaCross Wisconsin two daughters Wray Hiller Marshall Minnesota Mason Kaupka Cedar Rapids nine grandchildren two great grandchildren a brother Hugh Crayne Oskaloosa four sisters Frank McFarlane Washington George Horsey British Columbia Stevie Gallagher Berkeley J G Arnold Chincook Montana. Two children died in early childhood and two sons Key and Earl died after mature homes.
