Iowa City officials urge the legislature to appropriate 330000 to fix structural defects in the 133 year old Old Capitol building. The funding covers undetected structural repairs flame proofing and a sprinkler system and to improve access for physically handicapped persons.
Fayette Community Schools shut down after a flu outbreak with about 110 of 410 students absent on Tuesday. Principal Werdell Schmalle cited widespread flu-like symptoms across Fayette Elementary and High Schools while other northern Iowa districts report high absenteeism.
An early morning blaze gutted the Marion Bowl at the East End Shopping Center in Marion, causing about 420000 dollars in damage. Fire units fought the fire for three hours and smoke affected adjoining shops. Ralph Gordon, owner, cited extensive damage to the alley and smoke damage within the complex.
The National Weather Service warns renewed warm and possible heavy rainfall could expand floods in the mid Mississippi and lower Missouri basins. Snowpack remains heavy in a narrow belt from south central Nebraska to southwest Iowa, potentially prolonging and worsening flood conditions.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee voted 10 to 0 to exempt food and prescription drugs from Iowa’s sales and use tax, a key part of Gov. Ray’s program. Tax savings could reach 32 million dollars if approved, per State Revenue Director Briggs, with a detailed list of exempt items to be set by rule.

The Iowa House delayed action on a Gov. Robert D. Ray backed plan to allow private retail liquor outlets in small towns. After committee chair C. Raymond Fisher cited many questions, the bill was returned to the State Government Committee for further study amid debate between backing state monopoly and private sales advocates. Rep. Arthur Small's amendment proposed licenses for tavern owners and grocers, arguing rural Iowans lack nearby state stores and that private outlets could operate without cost to the state.
Senate leaders said they will postpone debate on a bill banning studded snow tires on Iowa roads until Monday. The measure would end studded tire use with a $30 annual fee for exemptions, while doctors and emergency vehicles would receive limited allowances between November 1 and April 1.
