Echo 2 satellite begins orbital flight from Vandenberg AFB
Echo 2, a 13 story high balloon satellite, launched from Vandenberg AFB at 5:59 a.m. PST atop an Atlas Agena two stage missile. It will circle the earth and relay pictures to Pretoria while scientists call it a peaceful space first and a step toward US USSR scientific cooperation. The 135 foot diameter "Satelloon" is designed to be visible worldwide and marks a milestone in space communication and international collaboration.

December 1963 liquor sales at the Iowa State Liquor Store in Washington rose to 37154.32 dollars from 33694.89 the prior year. Mt Pleasant increased from 23555.85 to 27529.25 and Fairfield from 97615.27 to 42373.24. The statewide total fell from 8702209.29 to 7285908.75 for all 191 stores.

Nine Die As Freak Tornado Hits Harpersville Alabama
A sudden tornado roared through Harpersville Alabama killing nine people and injuring many others. Homes collapsed trapping residents while a cloudburst flooded streets and delayed rescue efforts. Victims include Ed Kelley and Virginia Kelley with daughter Essie Mae, Betty McCall and her sons Mitch and Mike, Cathy Brewer, and Stella Thomas. The storm struck after nightfall with little warning.

British commandos quell Tanganyika mutiny in Dar es Salaam
British Marine commandos landed in Dar es Salaam at Tanganyika's request and crushed a mutiny in Tanganyikan army barracks. The assault, supported by Centaur carrier gunfire, left at least three Tanganyikan Rifles dead and ended with commandos in control. Brig. Edwin E Hill 84 Dies This Morning in Iowa County
Edwin E Hill aged 84 died today at Washington County Hospital after a three week illness. He lived at 609 North Avenue and will be buried in Lone Tree Cemetery after a Monday 10 AM funeral at Sherman-Eden Funeral Home led by Rev Theodore Schwartz. A retired carpenter born in Montezuma on January 2 1879 he married Florence Tonkinson in 1908 and resided in the county for 12 years. Survivors include his wife three sons James in Washington Edwin in Albany Oregon Arthur in Lone Tree two daughters Margaret Thompson in El Paso Texas and Lillian Neuenswader in Cedar Rapids eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
