Des Moines reports 62 cases of infantile paralysis since last July with 89 cases linked to homes using outdoor toilets. The piece highlights concerns over sanitation and public health in the city.
Stanton mortician Delaine Seller was injured while battling a blaze at a farm home. He suffered a double fracture of his left leg when knocked from a ladder as the chimney collapsed.
Due to deep snowdrifts the coffin was carried by a bobsled instead of the hearse at the burial of Thomas Faies 96 a Honey Creek farmer. After services the body was moved by bobsled to McIntosh cemetery.

A blaze swept the upper story of a frame house on Ottumwa’s south side. Firemen battled the freezing wind as five occupants escaped unharmed. David Fitzgerald and his sister Mary Howman occupied the lower portion while Arlo Covert his wife and son were on the upper floor.
Ames engineers at Iowa State College plan their annual Engineers Ball on February 3 featuring Gus Arnheim and his orchestra. The event will crown the Engineers Lady and the St. Pat of 1940.

Tom Ferguson, 64, of Humboldt, was released from the University of Iowa hospital Jen after months of treatment. He was struck by an auto driven by 17-year-old Duane Dunn as he stepped from a curb near the hydraulics laboratory, suffering severe cuts, rib fractures, and a possible lung puncture.
Mrs. Rossa Woods and her son Thomas fled their farm home in night clothes after awakening to smoke. The blaze gutted the northwest of the city residence and its contents, apparently caused by an overheated furnace.
Marion Sheldon, 29, confessed he tried to burn his apartment on January 10 to collect insurance and start a grocery business. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced by District Judge Homer A Fuller to a two year term at Fort Madison penitentiary.
A burglar broke into the Cooperative Service company oil station at 410 North Marion Avenue. Manager Glenn Holden said entry was gained by a window with a jimmy. About one gallon of cylinder oil and five dollars in cash were taken. The burglary occurred between midnight and daylight.
County officials report snow plows have cleared secondary and township roads after fresh drifts. Three new plows joined six working alongside maintainers to resume normal travel as weather eases. Winds caused renewed drift on Coppock and Washington River Road delaying reopening. Street crews in town, led by Blaine Holmes, cleared streets to restore normal travel.
Mrs. Forrest Schirmer died Friday at University Hospital in Iowa City from laryngeal diphtheria the first death in the county since 1929 Health officials placed contacts under quarantine and began throat cultures all negative so far. Parents are urged to immunize children over six months and monitor croupy symptoms as a warning sign.

Try Figgins v Hotle jury selection began in district court this afternoon for damages from an automobile accident. Attorneys Nolan Sehlaegel and T. Reagen Adams represent Figgins. Dunham Morrison represents Hotle.
The Greek freighter AEkatontarchos Drakoulis of 1100 tons with 28 crew was torpedoed 150 miles south of Portugal by a German U boat. Six crew members were killed and a lifeboat with ten men was unaccounted for as Portuguese ships searched the sea.
President Manuel Quezon told the Philippine national assembly that Filipinos must risk independence or accept permanent US retention. Speaking at the opening session, he doubted the United States would accept delaying independence beyond the 1946 target.
London reports quote a government spokesman saying Churchill’s call for a united front against Germany and Russia should not be seen as government policy. The spokesman noted no new departures and stressed the speech reflected Churchill’s views rather than official policy.
Washington Odd Fellows plan a Wellman meeting Tuesday night to study the first degree with members from Keota Wellman Kalona and Washington. Washington lodge will be dismissed so members may attend the Wellman session tomorrow night.
Charles W Chance, now a department head at Collinwood technical high school in Cleveland, writes Supt Ralston of Washington public schools. He recalls graduating in 1902 under Miss Woodford and others, and notes his long teaching career and a large technical high school. He asks for a mimeographed history book and best regards to former classmates.
Des Moines hosts the first annual midwinter banking conference at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. The meeting is organized by the organization of officers of county bankers associations, an affiliate of the Iowa Bankers Association.

William E. Borah received a state funeral in the Senate chamber where he served Idaho as a United States senator for 33 years. President Roosevelt, justices, cabinet members, and diplomats paid tribute to the 74 year old dean as the casket rested amid abundant flowers. Mrs. Borah, distant from the ceremony, waited outside in the lobby near the Vice President's office.
Washington's United Presbyterian church has begun plans to mark its centennial since the 1941 founding. A church session committee led by H H MecCleery will initiate steps, with members from the session, music department, Sunday school, Ladies Aid, trustees, and congregation.
Ames report says Iowa State College co-eds will seize control of campus on February 7 for the third annual Women s Day. Ann Robel of Des Moines will chair the event with an all women convocation and a formal dinner. The co-eds will run the Daily Student and publish a special edition.

Genoa Italy January 22 Shipping circles report hope fading for more than 160 passengers and crew of the burned Italian liner Grazie. Messages say 104 to 107 are missing in three life boats from the wreck. The ship carried 412 passengers and 231 crew. Rome reports 539 of 643 aboard have been rescued. Most missing are believed to be women and children taken off as the fire danger began.
Funeral and burial services were held today in Monmouth Illinois for Fred Cannon of Keosauqua who died Saturday evening in Fairfield hospital where he had been admitted as a pneumonia patient. He and his family formerly lived on a farm northwest of town about fifteen years ago and have since resided in Keosauqua. He is survived by his wife a son and two daughters. Albert Donovan a friend of the family received the death notice.
Finnish troops killed nearly 1,000 Russians in five engagements and destroyed at least 12 tanks, according to an official communique. Fighting spanned from the Karelian isthmus to the mid-Finland front, with Kollaanjoki and Kittila noted for heavy tank losses and multiple armored vehicles destroyed.

Eight Holstein heifers from the E. H. Maytag dairy farms near Newton were shipped to New York for onward shipment to Bogota Colombia. They were bought by the Colombian government for use on experimental farms. Four bulls from Maytag farms had already been sold to head herds in the same South American region.
