SIOUX CITY Roy Anderson of Correctionville, 63, was sentenced to five years in Fort Madison penitentiary for stealing four head of cattle on October 18 from Lawrence Swatson of Moville. Anderson, who was convicted five weeks ago, had appealed to the state supreme court.
Shelby residents again drew water from the municipal plant after a two day drought as a standpipe froze. A steam engine was used to thaw the tank and no school was held during the water shut off.
American Legion auxiliaries in Iowa sponsor an essay contest titled Story of Pioneer Life in Iowa. Details will be announced in English and social studies classes soon. Essays due April 15 to Miss Loretta Cusack of Creston.
Iowa suffered 4.745 million dollars in property losses in 1939 up from 1988 figures by 566 thousand. The total occurred in 5,409 fires, an upsurge of 670 fires from 1938, per John W. Strohm the Iowa state fire marshal in his annual report.
Waterloo report notes 20 year old Ralph Fagles exploded a flash bomb on the Fourth of July. The device shattered windows and neon signs near three businesses. His 30 day sentence for illegal fireworks was deferred until Friday amid frigid conditions.
Corydon notes rural mail carriers Walter Sharp and Carl Darrah ski to deliver mail on a blocked route. Darrah uses two brooms as makeshift poles while Sharp, the regular carrier, faces snowbound roads since last Saturday.
Judge J G Patterson directed a verdict for Ed Wymore mayor of Barnes City after prosecutors failed to show sufficient evidence linking him to the Walter Fuller cafe fire last summer. The incident damaged the adjoining Barnes City general store.
Des Moines bulletin from the Chamber of Commerce reports Iowa and Des Moines residents had a spendable income of 1 359 559 000 in 1939, up 69 million from 1938, a rise exceeded only twice in the prior decade. Gasoline taxes show a related drop from 15 604 247 to 54 407 in 1939.
The Dubuque trades and labor congress grievance committee urged Coach Eddie Anderson of Iowa University not to cross a picket line at Hotel Julian Dubuque where a Monday night banquet would be held. The hotel is on the union unfair list due to an operating engineers strike. Earlier the Iowa Young Democrats moved their spring convention from Dubuque to Waterloo because of the dispute.
Iowa attorney general rules automobile dealers must pay personal property taxes on cars in stock as of January 1 if those cars lack individual registration or license under state law. The ruling affects dealers and distributors statewide.
Local conservation officer Tom Johnston warns that quail and pheasants face starvation as snow covers natural food. He urges farmers and sportsmen to provide feed within farms, noting quail eat their weight in rain and will freeze without three days of sustenance. Chauffeurs licenses issued to Ellwood Phillips Muscatine and Paul Hazelett Ainsworth. County total 493 chauffeurs licenses for 1940, similar to last year. most licenses are for truck drivers.
Fort Dodge district judge J. Henderson denied Leighton Supply Co. petition seeking injunction to restrain the city from purchasing water softeners for rent.
Faye F. Welliver Welliver born April 19 1900 in Ainsworth married Forrest Schirmer May 18 1928. Survived by parents four children three sisters and one grandchild. Died after a three day illness at University hospital Iowa City. funeral plans by Jones funeral home not yet set.

Dispatches report a real battle as Finnish troops assault Russian positions near Marka. The Russians resist fiercely as Finns push from the front and both flanks in dense forest, aware the head of their column lies 120 miles from Murmansk base and risk being cutoff.
Four air raid alarms were sounded in Helsinki today between shortly before noon and dusk. No bombs were dropped on the city or suburbs, but the alarms indicate the bombings over Southern Finland were the worst of the war. Business in the city was disrupted by the alarms.
The Phalanx Group held its regular session at the North Side cafe last evening. Primus Shrum Lewis presided for the first time. The club accepted Ot tumwa's invitation to present their Phalanx charter next Friday evening January 26. Ten members announced plans to attend. Dave Elder spoke on his contacts with the Y's Men in Mexico. LeRoy Pratt and Vince Callahan attended as guests.
District Judge O. J. Henderson denied Walter Ross of Galt's plea to be deported to Germany to fight for the Nazi army. The court had sentenced Ross to a 10-year term in Anamosa reformatory on a forgery charge after his arrival from Germany 11 years ago.

Elisabeth Meyer a 22 year old student nurse from Kitzen Minnesota died in an Iowa City hospital accident. Dr Robert E Neff administrator of University hospitals said Miss Meyer was alone in a sterilizing room when a gas burner flame ignited nearby paper and a bottle of acetone toppled spilling disinfectant and fire onto her apron and uniform.
Frederick A. Welch of Des Moines was appointed director of education for the National Youth Administration in Iowa by Theodore P. Eslick. Welch leaves his 12 year post as editor of Midland Schools published by the Iowa State Teachers Association to take over duties from Dr. R. W. Tallman who left the post January 1.

Leslie Wirtz, 12, of Mason City slipped on thin ice at Clear Lake last week and drowned. His body was recovered 24 hours later near his grandparents’ home.
Washington January 20. The Senate announced the death of Senator William E Borah at 8:45 PM after a cerebrale hemorrhage. A state funeral was planned for 11:30 AM next Monday in the Senate chamber with President Roosevelt and cabinet to attend. Borah’s body will be sent to Boise for burial.
Funeral services were held yesterday for George W. Hotle at Sherman's funeral home, conducted by Rev. Carl W. Klein with music by a male quartet. Pallbearers for interment at Elm Grove cemetery included Paul Harvey, David Kleese, James Stewart, Walter Anderson, Del Walker and Lloyd Humston.
