A fire in the Spencer Daily Reporter plant started from a faulty flue in the mechanical department causing several thousand dollars in damage. The newspaper nonetheless published as usual with Paul Martin, co publisher, estimating the loss.
Mrs. Leone Suarez, 13, delivered an 8 pound 12 ounce daughter in Sioux City. The baby and mother are reported well. The father is Lenatius Sarrez, 20, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Whiting.
Waverly will skip its traditional ice harvest this year and perhaps forever officials of the Waverly Ice Co. announce. For years the company supplied 300 plus freight cars of ice to the Great Western railroad icehouse at Ocelwein, but a change in icing methods has removed the demand.
Charles City C G Kelm restates a damage suit against farmer John Kiefer of Roseville seeking 450 dollars after an initial claim of 7 633 dollars. Kelm, employed on the Kiefer farm, was injured when a bull attacked him and he spent seven weeks in the hospital.
Five Bremer county residents are moved from Independence state insane hospital to the Bremer county poor farm to cut costs by five dollars per month per person, about three hundred dollars yearly. The patients are described as not seriously ill and not curable, and the transfer relieves overcrowding at Independence.
Charley Sharp repeated his Pancake Day win by eating 62 cakes and 29 cups of coffee. The event drew 6,009 pancakes, 1,500 cups of coffee, 6 gallons of syrup, and 30 pounds of putter as Shary, a 71 year old retired farmer, watched.
Everett H. Smith, co publisher of the LaPorte City Progress Review, fights the Waterloo Daily Courier's bid to be named official county newspaper. The contest includes Cedar Falls Daily Record and Waterloo Press, with Smith challenging the Courier's subscription affidavit.
University of Iowa alumni L club executives across nine districts have been re appointed for another year. President Mo W Hyland of Tama announced the nine district officers including Dr Leonard P Justine in Mount Pleasant and Dr Max Kadesky in Dubuque. The slate covers Waterloo Mason City Creston Ames Red Oak Denison Mapleton and other communities.
Thirty-eight Shenandoah high school senior boys will try out occupations from meat cutting to headline writing this semester. They will work an hour and a half daily downtown for high school credits, not wages. R. K. Martin, who pioneered vocational guidance here, repeats the course due to demand. 11 of last year’s graduates now hold jobs at credits-based workplaces.
Secretary Morgenthau says a balanced budget would be healthy but did not specify how to balance revenues and outlays. He urged House subcommittee to cut public works and raise taxes while proposing raising the public debt limit from 45 to 50 billion dollars. President Roosevelt expects debt to top 44.9 billion by June 30, 1944.
After a bitter debate the house voted to extend the Dies investigation of un American activities for one year. The session featured sharp exchanges over the inquiry and a pointed attack on Chairman Martin Dies by Representative Frank Hook of Michigan.
Bob Risk and Claire Beatty, injured in a collision near Cotter in Louisa County, were allowed to leave the hospital after x rays. Risk sprained a knee and will rest it, not expected to cause long-term problems. Beatty sustained a painful but superficial chest injury and is active again today. The crash involved the Risk car driven by Beatty and a Dusenbery car driven by John Dusenbery. passenger Charles Grossman was uninjured. The Risk car was heavily damaged while the Dusenbery car had minor damage.
Iowa City building trades council prepared to circulate petitions protesting rejection of a proposed six million dollar dam on the Cedar River at Coralville. The project, offered by the federal government, drew opposition from the state conservation commission citing flood risk to farm land near Lake MacBride. Governor Wilson weighed a delegation from six cities asking objections be withdrawn.
A naval examiner from Burlington Iowa will visit the Washington post office on Wednesday January 24 from 11 00 a m to 4 00 p m to conduct physical examinations for potential recruits.
The case of Jay Fiskins against Ed Hotle for damages from an automobile accident near Riverside began in district court before Judge James P. Gaffney and a juried panel. Opening statements were made by D C Nolan for the plaintiff and B Morrison Jr for the defense. the first witness testified, and jurors faced delays due to late arrivals and legal points.
Everette Burham Wendell Baker and Tom Gray attended a district DeMolay officers meeting held in Burlington Sunday.
A notice invites young men aged 18 to 30 of good character with no dependants to apply for U S Navy enlistment. Applicants will undergo medical examination on site rather than traveling to Des Moines as in the past.
The Washington high school band of seventy members performs its annual winter concert this evening at 8 o'clock in the high school auditorium. The free program features vocal soloist Jane Steele, trombone soloist Charles Mayo, a brass sextet, and a clarinet quartet with Dorothy Turner and others.
Washington County holds about 25 000 quail and 4 000 to 5 000 pheasants facing severe winter hunger. Dry conditions last summer left scant natural food, and deep snow prevents foraging. Conservation officers urge immediate creation of feeding stations by farmers and sportsmen to sustain the birds.
In Columbus on January 23, President John L. Lewis of the CIO mine workers union attacked Federal Security Administrator Paul V. McNutt. He accused McNutt of using troops against labor and of seeking votes to become president. Lewis linked McNutt to Senator A. B. Chandler and compared them to English kings who sent troops to guard workers during strikes.
Snow and continued sub zero conditions were forecast for Iowa. A 15 degree below zero low was predicted for the northern half tonight, ten below in the southwest, and zero in the southeast. The state's coldest 24 hour reading reached 13 below zero at Iowa Falls.
A Dixie born cold spell spread snow and cold winds across central and eastern states. The south and east faced the worst conditions as the storm moved from Texas and Louisiana toward the Ohio river valley, making St Joseph Missouri the coldest U S spot at 18 degrees below zero last night.
Washington ministers assemble Monday January 29 at 10 a.m. in the YMCA. Dr. R. C. Keagy of Washington Methodist church will discuss Symbolism in Worship and S W Livingston of Washington will present Ministers and Attorneys. The program is billed as outstanding with enthusiastic reception from past listeners. Mr and Mrs J H Johnston and Mrs Davis of Crawfordsville were shoppers here today.
Bars of corn may be placed on nails driven into posts to keep grain out of reach of rabbits. Cracked corn and loose grain lose value on the ground unless fed daily. Use a self feeder or container to prevent access by other animals.
Public lectures announced for the Institute of International Understanding sponsored by Rotary and local groups. A seven member Rotarian committee led by Dr. F. W. Hastwood will handle arrangements. Tickets are free and available at the Y M C A and Journal office. The program promises improved local understanding of international affairs with four talks at the high school auditorium beginning Feb 20.
Helsinki January 28. A Soviet offensive against the Mannerheim line on the Karelian isthmus and near Lake Ladoga broke down under Finnish resistance. Official communique reports over 1,000 Russians killed at Kollaanjoki and six planes shot down. The attack spanned Summa to Lake Uola and continued for a second day.
Unity Freeman-Mitford, admired by Adolf Hitler as a Nordic beauty, is hospitalized in a nursing home for an operation to remove a bullet from her neck. She had been shot in Munich under unclear circumstances before returning to her father's country home.
Pollok J Wallace reports his brother Will Wallace formerly of Washington underwent an operation recently and is quite ill. He is about 74 years old.
In Claflin Kansas on January 23 Russell Hunter aged 21 robbed two banks and killed as he fled. He disclosed his identity during the Farmers and Merchants State Bank heist, taking 200 to 1500 dollars and forcing three people into a vault. Earlier he robbed Rushton State Bank of about 500 dollars before being shot by town marshal Fred Adams.
UP Postal officials in Washington report British seizures of United States mail impede postal service to many destinations. Director John Lam described the actions to a sub-committee, noting past protests did not stop the seizures, and said a vigorous State Department protest may be needed.
J Widmer of Wayland dies at his home near N after a months illness from a malignant lung condition. Funeral at Eleher church Thursday at 2 p.m. He was born 1877 in Ober Elsaus Fra and lived in Washington county since 1907. Survived by wife Eliga Graber Wurgler three children Hal Marvin and Kathryn three brothers and two sisters.
Des Moines the funeral for Mrs Freda Emery Sitler is slated after she died suddenly at about 6 30 pm in Des Moines hospital following surgery. She leaves daughter Patricia 6 mother Nettie Elmore and a sister, all of Des Moines.
Dr Giuseppe Motta longtime Swiss statesman and former president and five time vice president of Switzerland died early today after a period of poor health. He had served in government through the 1920s and 1930s and influenced postwar policy.
Mr and Mrs Howard Cleery were weekend guests and Mrs R L Gibson from Own City attended a bridge club meeting Saturday evening.
