Iowa jobless fund drains as claims spike

Carter Walks 1.2 Miles In People’s Inaugural Parade
President Carter took the oath as the 39th commander in chief and then walked hand in hand with Rosalynn down Pennsylvania Avenue in an open car for the first legs before hopping out to greet a cheering crowd. The couple braved subfreezing winds as roughly a quarter million spectators lined the route, with the Carters leading a two hour parade. After a morning service at First Baptist Church, Carter planned seven gala parties with about 60,000 supporters expected.

A Burlington woman, Robin Unzicker, 25, died after being shot in the head while cleaning snow from her car. A juvenile was arrested in Burlington and Melanie D. Staub, 17, was held on an open charge of murder as police pursued the suspect who fled into a nearby building.
