J. J. Fleig longtime Rubio postmaster will retire January 1 ending nearly 46 years in the job since the office opened May 19, 1904. He recalls many postal changes from three cent money orders to ten cent rates and a salary-based postmaster system. Rubio's population has declined and the town remains a one-man post office with no city delivery, relying on in-store mail pickup. Two Cars Damaged In Crash On Highway 218
Saturday night crash on highway 218 east of Riverside left two cars damaged but no injuries. Darrel Wingler of Los Angeles, driving a car owned by Gene Streb of Riverside, skidded on ice, hit a guard rail, then struck a second car driven by Vernon Thomas of Wilton Junction. Damages were estimated at 500 dollars for the Streb car and 200 dollars for the Thomas vehicle.
