Wayland school's hot lunch program started Monday in the new kitchen and dining room of the elementary building. Nearly 200 pupils ate lunch as high school students served as workers and two cooks operated the kitchen.
Prepared by Mildred Gisel, home economics instructor at Wayland, featured a pear salad, a potato meat bake, green beans, chocolate pudding and milk as part of the meal set.
Two Washington Hi Y club members will be elected as a boy Senator and Representative to join over 150 high school youths in Iowa Hi Y Youth and Government. They will attend a February 18 pre legislative conference at Drake University and later join a Model Legislature at the State Capitol April 21 and 22 to observe hearings and debates replicating state processes.
Kalona Iowa January meeting of Kalona Parent Teacher Association set for Thursday January 19 at 7 30 pm in the school auditorium. President Mrs Ford Skola will chair the business session followed by a program from the Alpha and Idris clubs including a one act play On The Air musical numbers a reading and a film subject.
Don Stutsman of Corn Belt Turkey Farms spoke at the Washington Rotary about rapid growth in turkey raising and processing. He cited four to five million dollars spent on turkeys in the county last year and the Washington plant processing 250000 birds, yielding over two million pounds of meat. He noted expanding county flocks, efficiency of turkeys as food, soil fertilization benefits, and income from by products like feathers, plus a new phase selling poults at eight weeks under farm supervision. Jay Brewer introduced the speaker.
Iowa Attorney General Robert Larson warned that gambling money would be poured into the next election campaign and hinted at behind the scenes maneuvering. He told the East Central Police Officers Association his office demands respect for all laws, and said gambling was singled out for a state wide drive because it is flagrant, vicious, and widespread.
Preliminary steps toward a Washington County Swine Producers Association were completed with over 200 farmers attending at the Legion rooms city hall. E. L Quaife and others urged formation. members include Day Ainsworth Rowe Wellman Stephens Crawfordsville Barnes Brighton Buck Washington Jones Ainsworth Gamon Washington Norman Wellman Walker Keota.
Davenport officials said Elnora Epperly, 22, who confessed to setting Mercy hospital fire, may be sent to an Illinois institution if the county sanity commission finds her insane. If committed, she would be placed at a state hospital in Mt. Pleasant, with the State Board of Control in Des Moines notified for possible transfer to Illinois. Hearing slated on murder charge after confession.
In New York up the defense rested its case as seven rebuttal witnesses testified. The government planned further rebuttal today with defense surrebuttal to follow. The trial schedule eyed Friday jurors as Judge Goddard weighed weekend deliberations after a hung jury in 1949.
Members of the Men's Brotherhood of the Christian church met for dinner and a business session Monday evening with 35 in attendance. Newly elected officers Wade Pence president Harlan Neuhart vice president and Harold Jarvis secretary treasurer led the session. The group wore overalls for the event and then worked on a church improvement project in the basement. Group One of the Women's Council served the dinner.
St James Parish installed fifty three members Sunday night January 15 into the St James Unit of the Notre Dame PS Father Kinnavey announced officers for the year: President Jim Redlinger vice president Wilfred Wittetoe secretary Doris Gevock treasurer Beulah Heck The group is the sixteenth parish to join and raises total members over one hundred Father Budreau East Pleasant Plain serves as spiritual advisor and organizer.
County treasurer W. E. Howell reports plate sales lagging with 4048 auto plates and 956 truck plates issued, about 100 fewer than last year. Treasurers office expects a final rush and notes February 1st is the deadline to buy plates without penalty.
Washington County Public Schools will survey pupils in 6th and 9th grades for hearing defects and test third graders for speech. Special Education Supervisor Myra M Hymans announces testing centers at Kalona on January 26 and Ainsworth on January 27 with hours and locations to be provided by Miss Hymans.
Extension engineer Dale Hall from Iowa State College will lead a discussion on tractor maintenance at the high school. It is the ninth of ten lectures on agricultural problems, with attendees urged to meet in the agriculture room at 7 30 Wednesday evening.
A first degree work will be held at the Masonic Temple Wednesday night at 8 o'clock. Members urged to attend as part of lodge ceremonies and initiation rites.

A dairy herd testing association was formed in Washington at a Farm Bureau meeting with farmers from Washington and Jefferson County. Dean Johnson of Fairfield will be tester starting February e. Fifteen farmers joined the association with about 12 more expected before month end. Officers include Orville Fry of Fairfield president Earl Davis of Washington vice president and Charles Smith of Richland treasurer. Board members are Don Rains Russell Sheckler Ted Meyer and Delbert Lewis.
Reports from Hainan say two Nationalist armies with 40,000 troops were flown from Yunnan to Hainan, bringing total Nationalist strength to about 80,000. Night raids by Nationalist planes hit Luichow peninsula and Swatow harbor as Communist forces concentrate a fleet for an invasion.
About 110 Washington county farmers will receive a 7 percent dividend from the Washington County Farm Loan association. The dividend applies to stock held as of November 30, 1949, with checks mailed today. Headquarters are in the Jeffrey building in Washington, open Fridays. Local directors include Elmer Steele president Arthur Boshart vice president Howard Anderson Ira Miksech Homer Vincent E W Cummings secretary treasurer.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce held their general business meeting at The Pines last night. Secretary Wendell Shaffer said discussions covered forming a Cub Scout organization in the city and the possibility of a pure bred Jersey stock show next summer.
High school principal Robert Everetts announced that Mrs. Everetts replaces Mrs. William Dunton who resigned mid term. Mrs Dunton, American and World history instructor, has moved to Iowa City. Mrs Everetts will assume duties immediately.
Angry United Mine Workers rank and file patrol coal fields driving for a nationwide strike. More than 78,600 miners idle in six states cutting production by 468000 tons daily amid credit cuts by chains. District officials urged talks while patrols spread in Western Pennsylvania and Western Virginia. A dynamited shovel at Mitana Inc open pit and attacks on vehicles reported as pickets target nonunion mines.
Funeral services for Mrs. Anna M. Fleming were conducted yesterday at 2 PM with Rev. William J. Grossheim and Rev. George Kerr presiding. Pallbearers included Scott Wilcox, Fred Palmer, Victor Blattner, Ralph Kleese, Milo Kallous, and Sam Witting. Interment followed at Em Grove Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home arranged the services.
