Ray proposes 5.57 percent budget hike for Iowa

Gov. Robert D. Ray sought a 5.57 per cent two year spending increase and a 2.74 billion biennial budget stressing living within our means. He pitched a 15 point property tax relief plan, local government taxing authority, and kept gains minimal with education and human services taking the largest shares.

No School Monday in Washington District and St James

No classes in Washington Community District schools or St James parochial school on Monday January 17. Elementary and junior high teachers will handle record keeping and grade reporting while high school staff prepare second semester schedules and student registrations.

Accidents in Washington and Riverside Reported Thursday

Local law officers investigated two automobile accidents Thursday morning. At East 11th and North 12th Washington at 6:55 a.m. Nancy Pauline Adrian and Herman Laird involved. $2400 damage. Laird treated for minor head injuries. Adrian charged with failure to yield at a stop sign. A crash south of the Johnson County line on highway 218 at 10 a.m. Anne Marie Jones of route one Riverside lost control on slick pavement. her car crossed the center line and was struck by southbound George Edward Herman of Dubuque. damage estimated at $500.

Property tax seminar set for Washington center

Area residents are reminded of a 7:30 p.m. seminar on Iowa property taxes at the Washington Community Center Monday January 17. Iowa State University Extension economist Dave Hammond will discuss tax matters. A second public affairs meeting on law enforcement sponsored by the Extension Service will be held January 24 in the Washington YMCA building.

Seed corn shipped from Washington for Iran voyage

A load of hybrid corn seed from Northrup King Seed Co. left the Washington plant bound for Philadelphia and then Teheran Iran. The two kilo bags and bales are sized 55 pounds each and all hybrids are suitable for Washington County farms.

Trial date set for Kalona slayer Adams in 1976 wife murder

Accused slayer Richard Dean Adams of Kalona is scheduled to go on trial February 15 in Washington County District Court. District Judge Ira F. Morrison ordered pre trial motions due by February 7. Adams, 38, pleads innocent and is free on $100,000 bond pending the trial.

Wyse Wins First Inauguration Invitation Frame

Kendra Wyse, a first time voter from Mt. Pleasant, plans to frame Carter inauguration invitation. She will attend St Marys in Omaha starting January 20 while her heart remains with Washington, D C. Her parents are James and Roberta Wyse Rt 5 Mt Pleasant.

Ray proposes overhaul of Iowa property tax system

Iowa Gov. Robert D. Ray urged a broad overhaul of assessment procedures in a 15 point plan to the Legislature, aiming to curb large valuation increases. He backed a regulated 5 percent cap in districts, continued ag land rules, recertification of assessors, and local option taxes to broaden revenue while keeping school funding at 74 percent. Legislative leaders will study the proposals in two weeks.

Iowa State Singers Preview Concert in Washington

The 55 member Iowa State Singers will perform a public concert in McCleery Auditorium at 7 15 p m on Saturday January 29 as a preview of their 1977 spring tour across the western and southwestern United States. Tickets cost 150 with proceeds split between the singers and the Community Center. The event is sponsored by the Washington County Iowa State University Club and includes a pre concert potluck supper and overnight housing arrangements for the group.

More snow spreads across the nation

Bitter cold that froze the Midwest to the morrow let up briefly on Thursday as another storm dumped snow and ice across the Central Plains to Indiana. An Indianapolis forecaster sighed as a fresh snowstorm rolled into Indiana where crews were still clearing 22 inches left by earlier storms.

Washington area farms win 1976 crop yield contest honors

Knupp & Son and Don Sheetz topped corn and soybean categories in the Washington County Crop Roosters contest. Knupp & Son scored 186.87 bushels per acre in corn with Pioneer 3184, while Don Sheetz led soybeans at 57.23 bushels per acre with Washington II. Harold Murphy and Keith Horn placed high in both divisions.
