Anyone may take the civil service law enforcement exam at 9 a.m. January 22 in the Washington County Law Enforcement Center, Washington. City streets faced hazards after light freezing rain and snow overnight and Thursday.
Mike Malone of Washington High School is named one of 16 finalists for the Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium at the University of Iowa. The event runs February 24 to 26 and includes finalists from Iowa and western Illinois competing for national scholarships and honors. Floyd Woods, faculty advisor, will accompany Malone and other Washington students Carrie Mineart, Karen Ruppert, Brenda Ray, Shirley Wellington, and Jeri Hoyle to the symposium.
Doctors at the Washington Medical Clinic cite Iowa Department of Health recommendations on measles immunization. Key points: those immunized at 12 months or older are adequately protected with no booster. re vaccinate children under 12 months. vaccinate infants 6 to 12 months with a booster at 15 months. re vaccinate those who had killed vaccine or gamma globulin with an attenuated vaccine.

Blair House Corporation calls for volunteers to complete interior work at the historic building. Harvey Timmins, 40, of rural Washington was chosen Wednesday night as president of the Washington County Hospital Board of Trustees, succeeding Dean Edwards whose term ended. The seven member board re elected most officers and faced issues including Brinton Trust Fund implications and rising malpractice premiums.
Washington Board of Education approved the purchase of three 60 passenger buses and a nine passenger station wagon at a total low bid of 21,499 for the buses and 4,413.32 for the station wagon. The board delayed action on a complete contract with the Washington Education Association to study the full proposal. They also discussed land use for a Developmental Center, a Farm Progress Show attendance plan, and several Southeast Seven Conference proposals aimed at energy conservation and scheduling. James Lloyd was named to the County Conference Board.
Des Moines UPI reports Gov. Robert D. Ray faces criticism for a nine point reorganization plan described as token with minimal fiscal impact. Aides say the package yields small savings, with total annual gains under $20,000, mainly from reducing per diem payments to advisory boards. The plan would merge agencies, remove councils, and streamline environmental, health, and justice functions. The biggest change targets the Department of Environmental Quality by consolidating four commissions into a single five member board.
President Ford delivers final State of the Union to Congress and TV audience from the Capitol. He says the nation is more perfect and urges action on tax, energy, and defense programs while praising Congress and noting Carter will lead next. Ford’s voice wavered as he closed with a prayer for the country.
New Hampshire National Guard crews cut holes in an ice covered pond on the McCarthy farm to recover a mysterious object that witnesses claimed showed high radioactivity. Officials led by Gov Thomson urged caution as readings fluctuated from possible radiation to normal background levels.
