On January 14, 1886, two couples wed in a farmhouse near South Bend Indiana. Today the four principals Mr and Mrs H H Swaim of South Bend and Mr and Mrs Charles E Nicholson of Iowa City observe at the Swarm home the fifty third anniversary of the double wedding.
Dr John Darling of Rochester Minnesota son of J N Darling was seriously injured when his car skidded on ice and struck a highway bridge a mile north of New Hampton Friday afternoon. He suffered a possible skull fracture and a fractured left arm.
Three youths from Onedin New York arrived in Iowa City early Friday driving a large sedan bound for Washington state. They left the city Friday night to hitch hike and parked the car for a nap. A lighter started a fire that destroyed the vehicle. A junk dealer saved $2 from the remains.
Madeline Ferron, 15, a St. Joseph's Academy sophomore, fainted and toppled over a stairway railing at the school causing fatal injuries. Polk county coroner Dr. A. E. Shaw said he would inspect the stairway before approving the physician’s death report.
Sen. George M. Hopkins of Guthrie Center will introduce a bill to change Iowa ballots. The proposal would list all candidates for a single office in one column regardless of political party, replacing the current party column layout.
Sen. William Weardsley of New Virginia introduced a bill in the Iowa legislature to bar outgoing governors from granting executive clemency in the final weeks of their terms. He cited Gov. Nelson Kraschel's clemency actions, 18 prisoners freed since January 1.
Des Moines reports December 1938 liquor sales at 170 Iowa Retail stores reached 1,502,665 dollars, the highest monthly total since the commission’s creation. The Christmas period drove demand, with November at 1,332,598 dollars and 1928 totals at 10,879,420 dollars.
Four men died when a twin motor airliner crashed shortly after takeoff in Miles City Montana authorities said motor failure caused the crash. Among the dead was M C Hewitt a Spokane mechanic who had been dead heading home and had left the plane before departure.
Lt Col Carl A Waldman officer in charge of manufacture at Rock Island arsenal will speak before the Y M C A Y's Men club in the community room about Rock Island Arsenal operations now and in case of war. He will discuss the new automatic infantry rifle and answer audience questions.
Representatives from ten organizations met to organize a four lecture series at Washington high school and junior college assemblies. Major C Douglas Booth of London will open January 27 on World Trade A Gateway to Peace with other speakers to follow. Tickets available from participating groups and the Journal office.
Des Moines reports a three week absence of winter ends with fox and ice returning to Iowa. Highways become slippery and hazardous due to ice and snow while fog blankets Sioux City. Snow, more cold air, and a moderate cold wave from Canada sweep across the northern states as temperatures fall in the Dakotas and Minnesota. Dr. A Donnell, U.S. weather forecaster in Chicago, calls the cold wave moderate.
The Busby Manufacturing company appoints Harold KE Gray of this city as state sales manager for the sign division. Gray previously worked at Tucker & Eicher garage and Standard Oil. Busby advertises its outdoor signs spelling city names with plans for new products in development.
Funeral services for Mrs Joan Simmering who died yesterday afternoon at her home are set for Sunday at 2 30 pm at L A Jones funeral home. Rev Carl W Klein will conduct the service and burial will be in Kim Grove cemetery. She was born May 26 187 in Germany and emigrated to America joining Greenview Illinois in 195 at age 22. She married John Simmering August 29 1896 at Iversperg Illinois and had children John H Edd Anna Emilie Coffman Elizabeth Johanna Tena Marshall Joseph and George H all but Elizabeth and George surviving plus her husband a sister and one brother in Germany. There are 16 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. The family lived in Greenview and on a farm near Fort Dodge Iowa before moving to Wahrngton county in 1510.
Mr and Mrs Walter Wells arrived last evening from Davenport where Wells was employed as a bank examiner. They will spend the weekend with Mrs Ed Wells and plan to go to Burlington on Monday.
The Iowa City University Baptist church pastor Rev Elmer Sirks will lead a 25 voice choir from Iowa City in a Sunday 7 30 service at the Baptist church in Washington. Local choir members and senior young people host a post service social with refreshments in the church dining room.
W H ODонley leaves for Miami Missouri to lead a Missouri river bridge project. H K E Daley reassigned from St Charles MO to head the underpass task, bringing his wife and daughter Florence to 809 West Madison. Former residents O Donley family had lived at 522 West Main in KE Ward.
Des Moines Iowa January 14 A bill by Senator Frank Pelzer of Atlantic aims to erase costly legal technicalities in real estate clear title. The measure declares merchantable title after 20 years possession and bars pre 1918 claims, with abstract requirements cut back to 1918 and a 21 year period for unresolved disputes.
Iowa crop receipts in November 1938 topped 16.9 million dollars doubling the 1937 level and outpacing 1936 and 1935. Livestock product receipts reached 39.1 million for November, while government subsidies soared to 3.7 million. For January–November 1938, principal farm product receipts totalled 465.2 million, up from 432.6 million in 1937. The report cites boosted cooperation with the farm program as a key factor behind higher subsidies.
The Senate appeared ready to back the House in refusing to appropriate more than 725000000, 150 million less than the president asked, to continue relief work until July, signaling a bipartisan move to curb WPA funding.
Mr and Mrs Miles Rukgab er of Mr Pleasant were guests last evening of Mr and Mrs W L Rukgab er. All attended the basketball game as the Miles Rukgabers son played on the team.
Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain left Italy by train to brief Britain on talks with Benito Mussolini. Lord Halifax proceeded to Geneva to inform Georges Bonnet of France. Reports say no new agreement emerged and each side stated its views.
Harold F. Gray chairs the Methodist Men club ticket drive and asks sellers to report proceeds by Tuesday. More tickets must be sold to fund two extra dinners. The next dinner is Thursday January 19 with Dr. Ed Voigt of Iowa City as guest speaker on Popular Pharisees.
John Mangold Jr. suffered serious head injuries in a collision on East Washington Street near South Fourth Avenue last night around 11:30. He was taken by ambulance to Washington county hospital where doctors reported his condition improving but injuries remained serious including skull fracture and brain concussion.
