Des Moines reports a 16 month old, Norald Sanfordson, inhaled a peanut two weeks ago. Doctors struggle to remove it with a bronchoscope but hope the child will cough it up naturally.
Construction on the Warren county courthouse is two months ahead of schedule says supervisor Martin Erickson. Twenty brick layers are on the job with a total payroll of sixty four workers.
Indianola reports Warren county board of supervisors voted a five dollar per month raise for deputies in the treasurer auditor and clerk offices. The increase applies to clerks in the auditor and treasurer offices as well.
Dr Kenneth Hunter, 40, suffered a fatal heart attack while riding with his wife and 14 year old son John. He died en route to his home in Wapello. A native of the city, he served in France with the Rainbow division during World War I and was a graduate of the University medical school.
An $0 acre tract of virgin timberland in McGregor was deeded to the Northeast Iowa Boy Scout council by Henry Wiegand and his sister Elizabeth Wiegand. A 1 acre pasture plot will be developed into a recreational field in time.
Railroad workers report a canine rides freight engines on the North Western for months. The dog often sits in the cab, watching the scenery roll by, with its home at the Clinton shops where engine foot boards shift.
Charles Sharp won the Humboldt Pancake Day contest by eating 55 pancakes setting a record. The event drew a crowd of several thousand and used 10,000 pancakes 50 pounds of butter 27 gallons of syrup and 4,000 cups of coffee to feed attendees.
DES MOINES Iowa earns a mere 31 dollars of a 10 million dollar nationwide allocation for highway construction in national forests. The state has no national forest, so the small apportionment seems almost ceremonial.
Iowa City reports the death of Dr John Carl Parish author of the University of Iowa song Old Gold. He served the Iowa campus in several roles before moving to the University of California Los Angeles faculty in 1922.
Four month old Sandra Brown, daughter of Clarence and Mrs. Brown, survived third degree burns on her legs. Surgeons in Des Moines removed scar tissue and grafted abdominal skin to her legs after extensive damage, keeping the child on her back with legs elevated for recovery.
Des Moines reports Sheriff C A Knee of Dallas County appointed chief of the state highway patrol by Secretary Karl G Miller. Knee, 51, Republican, will earn 3000 a year and lives in Adel. He succeeds Eb Conley who resumes his former duties as assistant chief after serving as acting chief since January 1. Conley had replaced John Hattery, whose removal sparked criticism from the state safety council.
In a Saturday bicycle court session at the Y judge Eleanor Tucker dispensed justice to a defendant riding after sunset. Clerk Mary Waldrige and battalion captain Jean Atchison stood nearby as George Mohr of the county safety council observed. The case against Don Crossett was postponed, while Bob Marble was convicted of riding double and ordered to refrain. New officers were elected: Dick Crossett captain, Lois Mace adjutant, and Dick Marshall prosecutor. Tucker and Baldrige remain in their roles.
The NYA project to tear down the Heights school proceeds slowly with part time workers certified for 44 hours per month. Four workers logged 22 hours over two weeks, and no work is planned this week. A new period starts Jan 23 if more youths are certified, with indoor tasks for 3 4 weeks and roof and wall removal likely in spring.
A major cold wave spreads from the northwest into Iowa with subzero readings in Humbolt region and Iowa Falls while Charles City records four below. Central and southern Iowa stay just above freezing though some areas dip to five below in the northeast. Snow is forecast as temperatures begin to rise Tuesday.
Sheriff Miles Hulett said a 24 year old hitchhiker confessed to killing Ruth Ella Scott a Milwaukee high school junior and injuring her widowed mother Ida L. Scott. The suspect identified himself as Ernest John Mahr of Milwaukee and was among three men detained for questioning.
Bill Wiles of Wellman and Richard J. Yoder found the bridge on primary road No. 1 at Whittaker, two miles north of town, too narrow for two cars to meet. The cars side swiped and were damaged. Dorothy Miller, a passenger in the Yoder vehicle, received a bump on her head.
Judge P. J. Siegers returned to Washington to resume the January term of district court. The court is not expected to be busy this week as many cases were assigned for later, with several local attorneys arguing before the state supreme court. Jury trials begin next Monday and nonjury cases are set for the following week.
Gary Dean Hazen son of Duane and Dolly Hazen born Sunday morning at the county hospital in Ainsworth and lived only a few hours. Burial services held this morning at Ainsworth cemetery with Rev. Coggeshal of the Ainsworth Methodist church officiating.
Des Moines Jan 16 UP Governor George A Wilson opened the state executive council meeting to newspaper men marking a departure from prior closed sessions. The council will advertise widely for bids on state material purchases and require full board approval for submitted bills. Ross Ewing to remain secretary for now.
J. E. B. Bo vee this morning sentenced Dean Stewart of Davenport formerly of Havree to thirty days in county jail for writing a bad check at the Gamble store. He was arrested last night by Deputy Sheriff Stan Klesey.
Lt Col Carl A Waldman will address the Ys Men's club Tuesday evening at 7 15 in the YMCA community room. He heads manufacture at the Rock Island government arsenal and will describe operations there to the public audience.
Ed Hotle was elected president of Washington County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting in the United Presbyterian church. Forty two ballots were cast with Sam Turkington as vice president and Kr. Hotle as treasurer, while W J Roudabusch resigned as county agent after six years of service. Mrs. Rollin Brown spoke of her New Orleans trip for the National convention and urged local farmers to focus on profitable crops, noting desolation of many southern farms.
Mrs. Brown discussed southern conditions from Vickaburg to Maton Rouge and Huey Long’s grave, noting critiques of southern corn yields. She cited soil limits and observed few corn plants during travel, interviewing locals about farming in the region.
Dr Charles McLaughlin and his wife were not seriously hurt when their car ditched near Greenfield Iowa last Friday while en route to Omaha for their son's wedding. The driver swerved to avoid a reckless vehicle causing the crash. repairs were needed before they continued to Omaha. He bore a shoulder bump and she suffered a possible rib injury.
Joseph Borys, 62, told police he battered Frances Piotrowski, 19, to death with an axe Sunday and waited 24 hours to report it, claiming Sunday is a day of rest. Police held him as investigators searched the scene where Piotrowski’s body was found beside her bed with a crushed head.
In Nicola and Harmon store east window on Saturday afternoon four girls dressed in dark red velvet frocks played several games of Chinese checkers. Winners were Mary Berdo first, Saraha Miller second, with Nancy Patterson and Frances Miller following. Prizes were awarded to each participant.
Washington Jan 16 WPA Administrator Harrington urged restoring relief funds to 875 million for the next five months before a Senate sub committee. He said nothing has changed since his earlier testimony and senators predicted the Senate would back the House against the administration’s higher estimate.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to extend social security and old age insurance to all citizens as quickly as possible. He transmitted the special board’s report on reform and warned against untried, unsound plans while outlining recommendations. The plan calls for unemployment protection for uncovered workers, stronger pensions or grants for the aged and dependent children, and merit-based state social security personnel to curb incompetence and political influence.
Frank Stransky 73 died Sunday night at his Riverside area farm from a heart attack after evening chores. Born June 1865 in a Stransky log cabin, he married Mary Rivera in 1894 and built a long time Riverside farm home. Survived by wife two sons Raymond and Lawrence one daughter Velma Simon brother Joseph Stransky sister Mia Thone and six grandchildren. Funeral plans not announced.
