Peggy Holt, 52, of Sioux City told Municipal Judge H. R. Kenaston she has been drunk for a month and wants to sober up. The judge sentenced her to seven days in jail.
Ames officer Ray Truesdell tried to sell tickets for the annual policemen and firemen fall event at $1.10 each. He received a five minute parking ticket for leaving his car in a curb zone. He pled guilty in municipal court and paid a $1 fine.
Iowa City officers of the University of Iowa alumni associations meet for their annual gathering Saturday. President Virgil Hancher of Chicago and about half of the 129 county directors are expected to attend.
Shenandoah celebrates editor C. N. Marvin as outstanding citizen of 1938 for 51 years of newspaper work and civic service. The Sentinel, founded in 1887, remains linked to Marvin who still contributes. American Legion post asked seventeen organizations to participate in the selection.
Seven hundred loose booklets containing a picture and description of every senior in the University of Iowa college of engineering were mailed to potential employers in the Midwest to aid graduation class placement. Procured under the direction of Dean Pret M Barnes, the program began last year with notable success. Each student receives 256 personal record sheets for their use.
Eldora resident Henry Schafer known as Hank, age 86, gained fame for repeated survival near death. He lost an arm, an eye, and two fingers, was buried alive three times, and survived a coal mine collapse, a well burial, a runaway incident, and a cannon discharge at a 1886 Eldora Fourth of July celebration.
Iowa City manager George F. Trotter confronted a would be kidnapper who demanded he drive to the Sears Roebuck store and open the safe. Trotter questioned the man as he kept a hand in his coat pocket and Mrs. Trotter alerted police.
Henry Snitkey has served as a weather observer in Humboldt for 30 years without pay. He once received a state fair pass but now works for the daily report solely for pride and recognition.

Rome reports that Britain will stand behind France if France and Italy clash, signaling a possible end to Chamberlain's appeasement. Mussolini told Chamberlain Italy does not seek war against France, while French diplomats point to Hitler's potential leverage over Rome and Berlin's uncertain stance.
Mrs. John Simmering died this afternoon at her home four and a half miles southwest of town. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 30 PM at the L. A. Jones funeral home.
Des Moines state highway patrolmen were sent to a country road near the Ramsey-Dooms Coal Co seven miles east of Knoxville to help coal trucks pass through striking miners lines. Acting chief BE A Conley said the move did not change policy and patrols would avoid labor disputes while keeping the road clear for traffic.
Sioux City resident L L. Sanford survived a self inflicted gunshot to the head two weeks ago. A doctor said the bullet traversed the brain’s front region, the exact function of which is unclear, but the wound remains uninfected due to the heat sterilization of the bullet’s explosion.
Marilyn Potts Crow, 18, obtained a divorce from Robert Crow, 48, and immediately married Addis Allensworth, 39, who had just secured a divorce from Florence Allensworth moments earlier. All are residents of Waterloo.
Mrs. Lizzie Cairns, 69, of Jefferson, joins Greene County officials in denouncing former Governor Kraschel for commuting Joseph Acerra's prison term for the 1936 murder beating and robbery. She recalls Acerra's threats and the lasting scars from the attack.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Mills and Mr and Mrs Ed Hites were called to Salem yesterday by the death of Harold Matthews brother of Mrs Mills and Mrs Hites. Funeral services will be held there tomorrow afternoon.
Joseph Mast, 76, died at his Noble home after two weeks of illness including flu and a heart condition. Funeral at Eicher church Saturday at 2 pm, burial in Eicher cemetery. wife Elizabeth Wenger survives along with daughter Ruth Mitchell and several siblings. Mast was a longtime Noble grocer and Kiester church member.

Mrs. Clara Turnipseed reports Wilbur Bear 82 died in Haig Alberta Canada where he had been hospitalized. A former Kalona resident he moved from Washington county about fifty years ago. Survived by sisters Mrs. Turnipseed Mrs. Alice Haig Seattle and Mrs. Winnie Crita Des Moines. wife Hello Powers Bear preceded him in death.
Winter returned to Iowa bringing snow and freezing temperatures to the western part of the state. January weather closed highways in northwestern counties with about two inches of snow.
D Wittman, 67, died at county hospital after a two year illness. Born Oct 3 1871 in Hommerts Holland, he immigrated in 1893 and settled in Washington after stints in Kalona. He married Emma Temple on Aug 27 1930 and, besides his wife, leaves siblings in Holland and a half-brother in Independence. Funeral at Sherman's Friday 2:40 pm with Rev Carl W Klein. burial Kim Grove Cemetery.
Carol Gray of Washington sues for 1200 dollars claiming injuries from a January 5 collision at East Main Street intersection. Plaintiff alleges driver negligence by William Crandall. Harold Gray acts through attorney BE D Morrison Jr. Mel P Crandall is named owner of the car and defendant with consent.

Five Barker Karpis gang members including Arthur Barker tried to break from Alcatraz in a fog shrouded dawn. Barker and Stamphill were wounded as guards opened fire before the men reached the rock’s edge.

More than 200 members of the Washington Produce and Supply company met at the court house to discuss the current state of the local poultry cooperative. Washington county director Karle Libe presided with Mrs. Tom Gerdes as secretary. Grant Lind say explained the industry situation and its impact on the cooperative, with broad county reach and 15 local groups across 21 southeastern Iowa counties. John A. Stewart serves as president and Mike Flynn as vice president.
Edward Winga, son of Mr and Mrs John Winga, broke an arm at home while playing last evening. He enjoys toys today but finds the splints somewhat bothersome.
