A Des Moines column reports Iowa residents contributed 1.7 million dollars more toward balancing federal income and outgo in 1938 than in 1937. Federal tax collections in Iowa rose 7.4 percent to 24,753,870.75 dollars, an increase of 1,715,707 dollars over 1937.
Emilia Cerretti, who arrived in the United States in 1922 from Italy, filed for divorce accusing his wife of desertion. He says she was to join him in America after he sent for her, but she declined and continues living in Italy.
A fifth set of twins was born to Mr and Mrs Tony Dencklau farmers near Vinicent. The newborns are girls and all are reported in excellent health by Dr C D Parsons who attended four of the five twin births. The Dencklau family now includes 17 children, 15 of whom are living. Three of the other twins are boys and one set includes a boy and a girl.
DES MOINES Governor Kraschel suspended a seven year prison term for Clarence F. Coan the Sioux City relief scandal figure convicted a month ago. The ruling grants executive reprieve amid ongoing questions about the Woodbury county relief scheme.
DES MOINES Governor Krasche in one of his final acts pardoned Mrs Marie I Johnson of River Sioux from a two year sentence at Rockwell City women's reformatory for corruptly influencing a public official. Her two boys would not be deprived of their home.
Justice H. N. Churchill halved the fine for H. R. Maudlin of Whitey City after Maudlin explained his anger at a nose thumbing by a rival motorist. Maudlin had passed a truck in a restricted zone with a highway patrolman watching.
The Rotary club will meet next Monday at noon at the high school. Nic McCleery, committee chair, announced. A luncheon by the domestic science department follows, then a program in the auditorium before the school assembly with speakers Mrs C A Speer and L A Warren.
George William Eash 74 died yesterday afternoon at his Wellman home after a paralysis stroke. Funeral at Lower Deer Creek church Friday at 10. Interment in Lower Deer Creek cemetery. Survived by wife Katie Anna Bender and seven children including Mrs. A. K. Zelir, Frank, Sam, Amelius, Glen, Mrs. Earl Fairchild, and Irvin Hash. Born 1864 on a Johnson county farm, married 1893, lived on the farm until moving to Wellman in 1958.
Frank Miller announces a four lecture series sponsored by local groups including the Rotary club and Chamber of Commerce. Speakers include Maj. C. Douglas Booth in London, Mrs. Margarete Kaiser in Berlin, Dr Raul D.hea in Washington, and Dr. John A. Morrison in Chicago. Sessions begin Jan 27 at 7:15 PM in the high school auditorium with free admission by ticket through sponsor groups or the Journal office.
Amy Christian of Washington high school will resign at semester end to join Cedar Rapids schools as a science teacher after eleven years in the Washington system. Mildred Woodburn of Centennial elementary also plans to move to Cedar Rapids for a new teaching position.
Washington State bank announces shifts after its annual directors meeting. Sidney Moore leaves as executive vice president to join Danville First National Bank in Illinois, becoming executive vice president there. G N Barclay is elected president. Lee Holland becomes vice president. Frank Kos rises to cashier. Charles Barclay becomes assistant cashier. Moore departs Jan 15 and plans relocation with his family to Danville. his daughter Beatrice will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana after the current semester ends.
Des Moines Jan 12 Major Rhea T. Hollett 46 of the 14th U S Cavalry died by self-inflicted gunshot at Fort Des Moines military post He shot himself through the temple on the post golf course.
Burn has submitted her resignation and will assume duties at a Cedar Rapids elementary school at the end of the current semester.
Governor George A. Wilson, sworn in by Chief Justice Richard F. Mitchell, outlined plans for economy and efficiency in state government. He urged reorganizing and consolidating departments to cut waste and duplication, emphasizing a duty to suggest rather than direct policy.
Washington Christian Church observed its silver anniversary with a dinner and meeting last evening. Twenty charter members attended a seven o'clock dinner featuring a birthday cake baked by Mrs. Helen Watkins and silver decorations. An informal program recalled the church's 25 year history and plans for the coming year. Officers were elected earlier and installed last Sunday.
At the grade crossing elimination site on North Second avenue W N O Donley superintendent of construction reports rapid progress due to favorable weather. Two draglines operate one pair with repairs while carpenters build forms for concrete footings and piling drives continue. A nearby house is torn down to clear space for the project.

Stewart vice president Frank C. Crone executive vice president E. F. Milck cashier Phil Weldin assistant cashier All employees were re-employed for the year.
A bipartisanship clash in Washington pits House Democrats and Republicans against the president's WPA relief request. They seek to trim the plan by 150 million dollars, urging approval of 575 million to fund relief through July. Rep. Clifton A. Woodrum of Virginia led the floor fight for the reduced appropriation.
A thief entered Dr. W. L. Alcorn’s private office between noon and 1 pm Tuesday and took $25 to $30 from a money drawer. A $67 check payable to Dr. Alcorn was later recovered in a mall box and mailed back to the doctor. Smaller checks were untouched. A Hastman radio reportedly stolen from W. H. Donley’s car near the State theater is also under investigation. Milwaukee teen Leon Eaves, 14, was found at the Milwaukee station and will be held for placement on a return to Milwaukee after his mother provided funds for a ticket.
