Amish corn auction enforces fines in Iowa holdout case
In Independence Iowa Buchanan County officials auctioned 980 bushels of Amish owned corn to raise 570 in fines for three Amish fathers who refused to send their children to state approved schools. Merritt McCardle bought the corn for 784 dollars at 80 cents a bushel amid neighborhood criticism and controversy over the stand against religious schooling. Governor Hughes said the Legislature may need to address the issue with potential legislation after talks with Amish and school officials.

Three story underground Viet Cong hideout uncovered near Saigon
UPI reported Australian and American forces captured a three story Viet Cong tunnel complex near Saigon. The site, about 25 miles northwest of the city, is described as the main political headquarters and a regimental command post. Allies included 8,000 U.S. troops in the operation with 84 Viet Cong killed, while the tunnel mapping continues.
