First of 34 Keokuk men on trial in Iowa case
C F Griffith 61 of Keokuk was found guilty of unlawful assembly by a Mount Pleasant justice. He was among 34 Keokuk residents returning from a University of Iowa game who were arrested for unlawful assembly and beer drinking on a public highway. The jury deliberated about 90 minutes. Damages totaling 1.7 million dollars have been filed by defendants against Mount Pleasant for false arrest.

Five back in custody after Anamosa escape
Five of eight Iowa men’s reformatories escapees were recaptured hiding in a Des Moines apartment clothes closet. The remaining three, believed to drive a stolen white 1963 Ford, were still sought across three states. Police recovered two knives a saw blade and three twenty dollar bills in the apartment but the couple renters did not know the convicts. The escape from the five story cellhouse involved vent access and lowering via a rubber cable.

Former Klan member testifies on church burnings in Slidell
John H. Gipson, 29, a former Ku Klux Klan member, testified before House investigators about a secret Klan wrecking crew that planned arsons at the Methodist Youth Center and Providence Baptist Church in Slidell Louisiana last August. He described beating a white youth in 1964, quitting the Klan this month, and said the group planned the burnings after a meeting on Aug. 1. Gipson named others assigned to the attacks and said his wife’s objections saved him from going. The committee nears completion of its Louisiana Klan study with expected testimony from Dr. J Malcolm Edwards.

Henry C Buckingham, president of Advance Ross Electronics, announced a five cent hourly increase for production employees at the Washington plant effective January 31. Evidence of North Vietnamese antiaircraft battalion in the south
American troops operating along the Cambodian border reported evidence from three captured North Vietnamese regulars of an antiaircraft battalion known as H-13 infiltrating South Vietnam. The unit supposedly held 18 heavy guns and used a Chinese version of the 50 caliber. In the rest of the action, paratroopers and infantry near Saigon, with Australian support, killed 62 Viet Cong and detained hundreds in Operation Crimp, while the 1st Air Cavalry swept the Pleiku border area with limited contact.
