Fire Forces Crew To Abandon Ship
An engine room fire forced 46 aboard the army transport Joseph V. Connolly to abandon ship 900 miles east of New York. The 45 crewmen and one army officer rode lifeboats as four rescue ships and coast guard aircraft rushed to the scene after SOS signals at 4:51 a.m. EST. The ship carried empty caskets and had an army officer aboard to oversee repatriation of war dead from Europe.
