Rural Washington man jailed for arson in Burlington fires
Donald F. Patterson, 21, of a rural Washington area, was sentenced Friday in Burlington to 10 years in Ft. Madison penitentiary after pleading guilty to arson. Cedar Rapids police sought two youths who attacked and robbed 73 year old Joseph Swatosh as he walked to church. He was treated at Mercy Hospital for facial abrasions and released. The pair stole 17 dollars from his coin purse after he struck one youth on the finger and they fled.

Eight Escapees From Anamosa Reformatory Captured in Des Moines
Five of the eight convicts who escaped from the Anamosa men's reformatory were captured by Des Moines police after a tip. Three suspects remained at large, believed to be in a white 1963 Ford pickup with McNamara Plumbing and Heating lettering and plate 53 1513. The captives arrived in Des Moines in three stolen cars. one victim was carjacked near Bernard, Iowa, and another farmstead robbery occurred near Bernard where a 1955 Plymouth was stolen. The escape involved eight inmates lowering themselves from the reformatory roof by a rubberized cable. The group’s names and ages range from 17 to 29, with sentences including robbery, breaking and entering, and larceny.
