Lt. F. W. Nunan son of Mr and Mrs N E Nunan has arrived in San Francisco after two years of duty in the South Pacific and expects to reach Washington the first of next week. He is on a 30 day emergency leave due to his grandfather Rev E H Willey of East Pleasant Plain illness.
Mrs. J. C. Mitten with her son and daughter-in-law from Pella spent part of yesterday with Emma J. Anderson in the T. L. Brookhart home. Mrs. Anderson observed her 92nd birthday.
Wayne Joseph Barnes wins the Journal boys grand prize for the year a $25 bond after a perfect year with only one missed paper and 100 customers on his route in northeast Washington Jerry Cochran also earns a $10 first prize with a perfect 3 month record and 195 customers on his southeast route John completes a perfect 3 month record and second prize standings with 6 etc Nick Gevock earns $19 for a three month perfect record and 95 customers on East side routes Tom Adam previously won a $10 first prize and has 77 customers on the south side of East Main and East Washington Streets

Colder weather moved back into Iowa today with the Weather Bureau predicting a colder tonight and tomorrow. Rain snow and sleet were reported in parts of the state and driving conditions were noted as bad in many sections as a northwest wind brings a new cold wave. Snow is forecast for the eastern portion tonight.
Grant Pearson of seven miles northeast of town died last evening at the county hospital after years of ill health. Born July 27, 1865 in Kokomo, he was a son of Abram and Julia Pearson and lived on the Bethel farm in Jackson Township. Survived by two brothers and two sisters, the funeral will be at L. A. Jones funeral home Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. W. Z. Allen and Rev. T. E. White officiating. burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
In Chicago on January 11 1946 detectives mingled with mourners at the funeral of six year old Suzanne Degnan as the search for her kidnapper goes on. Police offered no suspect in custody and said only a lucky break would spur an arrest while detectives retraced the neighborhood for new clues. The rites took place at St Gertrudes church with Suzanne’s first grade classmates in attendance.
Keokuk was believed reached to day as water receded slightly. The stream dropped a tenth of a foot from yesterday’s high mark. National Carbide company resumed operations after a one day closure. Water was off highway 61 south of Keokuk. All busses and trains were operating.
Floyd L. Ellis of Washington has perfected a simple device to attach to contour plowing machines, aiming to simplify field leveling and improve soil conservation. A patent is pending, with demonstrations planned in Wayne County Iowa and potential manufacture in Washington. The six inch by nine inch, four pound instrument mounts on the tractor and indicates automatically how to steer for correct contour plowing.
Washington officials deny price hikes for men and boys suits and overcoats as inventories run tight across Iowa. Crowe of the Iowa Retail Clothesmen predicts no relief until second quarter with April to June shipments rising, but shortages will persist at least six months.
New York and major cities report widespread picketing around telephone exchanges as the association of communications equipment workers strikes paralyze long distance service in 44 states. Emergency calls only in several large metros. dial service largely unaffected.
The nationwide strike of some telephone workers has caused limited disruption in Washington, with Iowa Continental employees not involved. Local calls remain unaffected and Bell long distance operators and maintenance staff are on duty, though brief trouble was noted for calls to Chicago and St. Louis.
