Iowa national guard and Des Moines authorities rounded up forged draft registration cards. High school students allegedly used the cards to show they were 21 to buy beer and cigarettes. Officials traced the cards to a guard member who allegedly tried to sell them for 25 cents each to three North High students.
Albert Thurman, 66, was killed at the McConnell Leather Goods Co. in Burlington when his clothing became entangled in a revolving engine shaft. F W Bremer, a shipping clerk, found the victim after being alerted by noise from the engine room.
The Wapsie Valley Creamery Co reported the theft of 1,230 pounds of butter from its Masonville branch. Sheriff Carl Anderson said the rear door was forced and the refrigerator lock broken, with butter loaded into a truck. The haul included 1,170 one-pound packages and 60 four-ounce packages, packed in 80 pound boxes.
Mildred Clark and Dorothy Morgan both 17 from Tama were located in Los Angeles California per a telegram to the Tama county sheriff from A C Hohmann Los Angeles police chief. The message said Dorothy Morgan's father Ben Morgan was in Los Angeles to retrieve her. Mildred’s mother Mrs Glen Clark said her daughter has obtained work in California and may not return soon.
Harold O. Mc Kim of Burlington, Iowa, elected president of the Iowa Fox and Fur Breeders Association for the seventh year and winner of first prize for best furred pelt at the Pest show in Des Moines. His eight months old silver fox pelt, valued at 150 dollars, earned top texture color and density. He and his wife, who began the ranch 18 years ago, received a large silver loving cup trophy.
Phalanx club installed officers for 1941 at a Y M C A dinner meeting. Logan Heilman primus Harold Wehr pro primus Tom Gray tribune Wendell Baker quastre led the ceremony. Richard McCleery spoke on club principles and community role. Membership invitations will be issued.
An overnight conference with John R. Owens from the Office of Production Management ended a threatened walkout at Fairchild Engine and Airplane in East Farmingdale New York on a $75 million airpower motor contract. A 1400 miner strike at Republic Steel mines Clarkesville and Frederickstown Pennsylvania was predicted to settle.
Iowa state conservation commission proposes a seven day pheasant season and higher possession limits for quail to 16 while reducing bullhead daily catch to 15 and maintaining an 80 possession cap. It also seeks uniform bass length, later rabbit and squirrel seasons, repeal of pet game animal provisions, and aligning rock and sand sturgeon season with Wisconsin law.
Wendell Baker and Shrum Lewis provided entertainment for the remainder of the meeting. The next dinner meeting is scheduled for January 24 at the YMCA with a program being planned by Charles Morris and Richard McIntosh.
Wilhelmina Mary Green sues Claude S. Green for divorce citing marriage in Lane Missouri on March 16 1932 and residence in North English and Ainsworth. She seeks custody of their eight year old son David Ernest Green and alimony for herself and child with I W Livingston as attorney.
The Trinity Lutheran church in Washington marks ten years since organization in 1931. A planning committee led by William M. Tweeten Walter Oetjen and Walter Schroeder organizes a Jan 26 observance with programs morning and afternoon and hopes to host Rev. Robert Grote of Guthrie Center Iowa. The congregation may also celebrate ten years in its own building in December after purchasing and remodeling the former Episcopalian church on East Second Street.
Representative Robert Bins of Eagle Grove wins the fifth ballot nomination for speaker of the Iowa house with 54 votes and is expected to be elected at the opening session Monday. John Irwin of Keokuk garners 30 votes, Henry Burma 2, and the pay for the post is $2,099.

The Washington County Farmers Mutual Insurance Association held its annual meeting with Secretary Charles Kennedy reporting in force insurance at the start of the year totaling 21 105 718.86 and written business of 4 832 713.56. Losses fell to 27 375.58 on 219 claims. Treasurer W O Morgan noted an ending treasury of 49 132.25. Directors were re elected and officers reelected including Ira Coon as president. The group adopted Iowa standard policies and new by laws while preserving long standing leadership and 68 years in operation.
Des Moines Iowa Atty Gen John Rankin announces Floyd Philbrick of Cedar Rapids is promoted to first assistant replacing J C Eichhorn who resigned Philbrick will earn 4500 per year up from 3800 Rankin also appoints William F MacFarlin 26 Republican of Montezuma as assistant attorney general
The Washington Concert League presents its second program next Wednesday at 8 15 p m in the high school auditorium featuring violinist Kato Havas and bass-baritone John Neher. The 18 year old Hungarian young woman has electrified New York audiences since her Carnegie Hall debut less than a year ago. She began at five, gave her first recital at seven, and her Budapest debut at 16 to a standing ovation. She arrived in America a year ago and made her New York debut October 10 1939. Since then she has appeared on radio and concert stages between engagements and rehearsals, with occasional rest in a mountain cabin.
Troopers of Washington's Troop D 113th Cavalry begin a year of federal service with eight o'clock Monday assembly at the armory. They will be sworn in by Captain O J Brown, receive meals there, undergo physicals led by Capt Cast e ll, Keith and Lt Vetter, and may be sent to Brownwood, Texas in roughly ten days. 115 men currently enlistment includes 27 new recruits.
John Pehler announces a V F W and Knights of Columbus bon voyage dance for Troop D as they head to Texas for training. The January 14 gathering at 8 15 pm at the V F W and K C hall invites soldiers and their ladies, Reserve Corps officers, and Selective Service Class 1A members to attend.

Lowell E. Lake pleaded guilty in Justice Court before J. E. Bovee to petty larceny. He was fined $100 or thirty days in jail for allegedly taking two sections of a barrow from Elmer Horning, who lives north of Washington.
