Soldier on 80 day furlough shot by accident
Priv Willard Dement, 138, arriving home from a U S army furlough, told his family this would be a night burglars could not wake him. A rifle placed under the bed fired when his brother Clarence shook the bed to arouse him, striking the elbow but causing only a superficial injury.

Harola Childs 78 a longtime colt trainer who worked for noted breeders died in University Hospital Iowa City. Born in West Liberty he returned to his birthplace after retiring seven years ago and was never married. Survived by a nephew Harola Childs 11 of Des Moines. He trained colts for Governor Stanford at Palo Alto for Miller and Sibley farm at Franklin Penn and for Col Jacob Ruppert owner of the New York Yankees.
